Driftmark is the largest island in Blackwater Bay, even larger than its more famous island neighbour of Dragonstone. From Driftmark’s long eastern point, the island of Dragonstone can be seen on a clear day.
Built from the same black stone as Dragonstone, the island is dominated by Castle Driftmark, located on the highest point of the island.

Eighteen ships led by Lord Aurane Velaryon anchor off, but outside the port of Driftmark. Each ship flies the colours of House Targaryen and House Velaryon.
A large party of 40 men, this time led by Tyrio Querini (at Tyrio's insistence), is rowed ashore. The 40 men are heavily armed and carry the banner of House Velaryon.
Aurane Velaryon watches anxiously from the Sealion as the party is rowed ashore. After the disappearance of his scouting party at Claw Island, he keeps his men on full alert for possible attack from whoever might control Driftmark presently.

The banners atop of Driftmark are the banners of House Velaryon, but the shore party is met by twenty mounted knights with their lances lowered.

Tyrio Querini strode forward with the banner of House Velaryon carried by one of the men beside him. Tyrio's other men waited warily behind them, their shields raised and their hands not far from their swords.
Tyrio raised his hand.
"Greetings. I come from Lord Aurane Velaryon, Lord of Driftmark and Lord of the Tydes, eldest son and legitimate heir of the late Lord Monterys Velaryon of Driftmark. Who commands here?"

"We serve Lord Tydwell Velaryon. The current lord of Driftmark." The knights reply.

Tyrio spat contemptuously on the ground at the reply.
"And what claim does this Tydwell Velaryon have to be the rightful heir of the late Lord Monterys Velaryon?"

"Thatcher is dead, his forces routed and his appointees are all being removed.
"Tell your Tydwell, either he gives up his Lordship peacefully to the rightful heir, Lord Aurane, or he'll face an army that will do it for him."

"Fuck your army, we stand ready." The man replied, "Leave or die. Tell them we will fight to the last man for this island."

"I'll tell them. Tell Tydwell that his days as a Cultist usurper are coming to an end."
Tyrio spat contemptuously again and gave the order to retreat. His men began to retreat in good order towards the boats.

"I will. But it won't make him happy." The man replied.

"Neither will his hanging", Tyrio called out as his men clambered onto their boats and began to row towards the fleet.

////////////////////// - December, 572
The hundred and a half ships under the command of Ser Petyr Redwyne, which comprised the Crown's fleet, circled around Driftmark to sail in from the east, so that the primary port could be secured.
The fleet weighs anchor a half a mile from shore and Ser Petyr stands on the deck of his ship with a spyglass, looking for what defenses, if any, the men holding Driftmark had prepared.

Lord Velaryon and Prince Aegon had crossed to Lord Petyr's flagship, when the fleet had weighed anchor. They were welcomed aboard and quickly joined Petyr Redwyne on the deck, together with a number of junior officers and other lords that were present.

"Lord Velaryon, your grace," Petyr said by way of greeting, when the other two commanders were brought to the forecastle of his flagship. "You both likely know far more about these waters than I, as well as the defensive capabilities of Driftmark.
"Once we establish a beach-head I would ask that your grace command the armies," he said, nodding respectfully to Aegon. "Assaulting castles is not my area of expertise, but I know that her grace desires us to deal quickly with the traitors here, so that we might move south toward the Arbor to dislodge that forsaken pirate scum from my brother's lands. If we do not have time for a prolonged siege, does your grace have any suggestions for taking Driftmark?"
