Aegon thought a moment. He rolled out a map of Driftmark, that previously had been drawn from Aurane's recollections of Driftmark and Captain Querini's observations when he had last gone ashore to negotiate with the usurper Tydwell.
His finger stabbed at the map several times. "I say we land here, here and here simultaneously with as many numbers as we can put ashore."
"Once ashore we merge the landing parties and secure all of the island outside the castle. We then negotiate for the surrender of the castle from a position of strength. That gives me time to observe the defences and devise a plan of assault, if surrender is not forthcoming."

Petyr studied the map carefully, looking off at the actual island a mile away several times. "Very well. I am reluctant to divide men even to put them ashore, but I will trust your judgements, your grace."
The knight began barking orders to his men, which were then relayed to the rest of the ships. Fifteen ships would land at each of the spots that Aegon had indicated, and their men would disembark and join together to secure the beach while the rest of the army landed.

As they ships moved forward ten enemy ships moved out to engage. Five ships were follow closely by five more ships. The first five ships were heavily manned, but not true war ships, but there appeared to be almost no crew on the second set of five ships.

Petyr swore when he played his spyglass over the approaching ships, and he ordered the royal standard to be hoist from the Valkyrie's mainsail. The signalers began flashing his orders to the forty-five ships that had broken away from the rest of the fleet, while the ships at anchor hastened to raise them.
The thirty of the forty five ships were ordered to converge together and move to surround the first group of five ships that were manned with soldiers, while the other fifteen were ordered to keep their distance from the second group of five and to launch fire arrows from a safe distance.

The five leading ships cut hard to port, and began to return to the safety of the harbor allowing the second row of ships to head straight toward the large fleet.

Ten ships split off from the main group, heading to intercept the five ships heading toward the fleet. They begin shooting fire arrows immediately, while the rest of the fleet scatters apart, at full speed, readying their own archers for when the five ships come into range.
The thirty ships of the original landing party swing to starboard and begin pursuit of those heading back to port, while the other fifteen turn toward the five crewless ships, moving within arrow range and beginning to fire but not allowing the enemy ships to close the distance between them.

Aurane Velaryon had returned to his ships, after conferring with Petry Redwyne. Fifteen of his ships were to make up one landing party and he was to command the entire land force until his uncle joined them.
Lord Velaryon suspected what the second row of ships might be carrying and he frantically signalled his fifteen ships to cut away from the advancing five ships. With relief he saw some of the other ships doing the same.
They began pursuing the other five ships heading back into port.

The five fire ships ignited, and met with the ten interdicting ships. The ten ships are successful and stop the fire ships from reaching the main fleet. Seven of the ten ships are lit aflame though.
The five retreating the harbor beat their pursuers, and are under the cover of shore based weaponry.

The men aboard the burning ships frantically attempt to fight the fires, while the three nearby ships that were not burning started launching their longboats to evacuate the burning warships if necessary.
The portion of the fleet chasing the five remaining traitor ships broke off their persuit just out of range of the weaponry on the shore, and began to swing around toward the spots where they had originally planned to disembark their armies.

Once it was clear that the fleet was no longer being threatened, Petyr ordered the remaining ships to put their soldiers ashore as quickly as possible at a spot of unprotected beach. Once enough of the ships had landed their men, they were ordered to return quickly to where the burning ships were still attempting to be saved, and would evacuate as many men as possible.
The soldiers who landed immediately started to build basic fortifications, to ensure their position could not be easily assaulted by rebel soldiers.

Prince Aegon comes ashore once the beach-head is established and takes command.
He immediately orders the island and the approaches in and out of the keep to be secured. Shortly after sends Ser Maekar Velaryon together with twenty armed men under a flag of truce to the keep to negotiate surrender. While this is done landings on the beach continue apace.
Out of bowshot Aegon studies the fortifications with a practiced eye, planning a possible attack, occasionally consulting with his nephew Lord Velaryon and other officers present.
Ser Maekar and his men ride up to the keep cautiously, with their visors down and their shields up. They ask to speak to the commander of the keep or his representative.

Ser Selwyn Stone, who had accompanied the fleet, watched the envoys ride up to the Keep from the camp. He was not in command of any men, but he itched for a battle for some reason, after the horror of seeing Lord Selwyn so maimed so he had decided to join the army.
He seemed slightly bored; these rebels had refused to surrender before, so it seemed like wasted time since their answer would likely be no different. He bowed his head respectfully to the Prince, when their paths crossed on the training field and in the growing fort.

They have given up control of the land and retreated into the keep.
