Maekar looked at his wife, then looked back at Joanna.
"I have had no part in any murders, or any attempted murders," he said, staring at her straight. "Until you offer more specific accusations, I will not be able to tell you how you are specifically wrong."

"You were accused of attempting to kill me when I travelled from the Eyrie to Runestone, and killing my husband Jon Royce in my place. You men were caught at the scene of the crime, I believe."

"Maekar, you have been accused of both murder and attempted murder. My man Benjen Blackfyre and Albar Stone are here to ensure that you do not attempt to flee until I have said my piece." She indicated the two knights standing behind her. "Albar, guard the door. Benjen, stay beside me. Well, Maekar, what do you have to say for yourself?" Albar stood in front of the door, but did not otherwise lock it.

Maekar's eyes widened slightly. "I reject the accusation entirely, and find its timing suspicious in the extreme. What reason would I have for doing this?"

Joanna sighed.
"According to my informant, you believe that I was responsible for the attacks on my cousin Arya, which I most certainly am not, and chose to kill me rather than let the matter come to trial. I for one find that accusation somewhat odd."

"A ridiculous motive. Lady Aryanna has always spoken of you as a friend, and there has always been a more compelling suspect. But more importantly, why would I attack my sister to save my cousin? I do not place some abstract concept of morality above House Targaryen."

Joanna nodded.
"Thank you, Maeakr. You confirm what I myself thought, but I cannot let you leave quite yet. How do you refute my informant's claim that your own men were found to be culpable in my husband's death?"

"It is difficult to refute when this is the first I hear of it. You said these men were caught at the scene of the attack? By whom? All my men are accounted for."

She whispered a name in his ear.

Maekar's jaw tensed at the name. "As I have said, all my men are accounted for. These men who he claims to have caught must be imposters."

Anni was still silent. She was becoming worried as to what was happening to her husband
