Is it just me, or are all of those people NPC's? Aren't there any people in the Kingsguard who are main characters? I mean... after the war, there were no main characters good enough to get in? I don't think it was so much that they weren't good enough to get in, it's just that being the Kings silent shadow limits your options somewhat. A shame as I really like the Kingsguard from the books.

Rhodri's first set out to become a Kingsguard, but his ambition changed when he realized he could attain good positions and still get laid. Being a Kingsguard PC is very limiting -- no lands, no women, and no freedom -- you just follow the King around.

I think being in the Kingsguard does limit you, but you can still do things. You may escort VPs around, but you do do other things. Being in the Kingsguard is really no different from being a knight. You can enter tourneys, your entire existence is based on fighting, etc.
Also, when you said you like the Kingsguard from the books, where you talking about King Tommen's Kingsguard? Because personally, the only person I like is Jaime, and I only started liking him at the end of the book when he was shown as becoming wiser and starting to really fit the position. All the other Kingsguard soil the name, and are all unworthy. Ser Loras is ok, but he is too young just as Jaime was, and now Jaime understands that Loras is just like he used to be.

Yeah it was mainly Rhaegar's Kingsguard I liked. Barristan the Bold kicked ass.

Don't forget Gerold Hightower, the White Bull. I loved what little we saw of him.

He did! I mean really... He snuck into a tourney at age 10!!!! I mean seriously, he was VERY bold
Also, Ser Arthur Dayne is a personal favorite. Best friend of Rhaegar, most renowned knight in westeros and probably the world, and a large sum of deeds to put under his belt
What little did we see of Ser Gerold? I don't remember anything in the books about him

Eh, I don't know if that's true, it seems to me it depends on how the king uses them, as they can often act as representatives of the king in important matters. I'd still like to see Cole in the Kingsguard, he's not like to get any great lands anyhow, and for RP purposes I imagine an amount of freedom would be given to any PC in the Kingsguard.

I agree Cole, Auron doesn't seem to be in any position for gaining a Lordship either

You guys do know that the only way to gain a lordship in this game is to kill your lord, right...

Or take him captive and give him over to the king, and then gain regency over a child most probably concieved through adultery.

What about Balon Swann? He sounds pretty awesome.
