--------------------
The largely ceremonial gates to Lannisport, once gilded and ornately carved lie stripped, burnt and smashed as the party approach the gutted ruins of the city. The ashes of huge funeral pyres lie outside the walls, the remains of the dead inhabitants and defenders blackened and cracked open. The smell is near overpowering and Danwell has to lift his sleeve to his nose to avoid gagging. A few gaunt locals peer out from the shells of nearby shattered buildings but they have the look of feral animals and quickly disappear once they are noticed

Gawyn strove for calm as they rode. His excitement had dissipated, replaced by horror, revulsion and fear, though he strove not to let it show on his face.

Danwell's horse reared slightly as it caught a whiff of the burnt flesh and he patted it's neck reassuringly "Easy girl. They can't hurt you" he said soothingly. "Maxwell, Gawyn. I want you on point. See if those keen eyes of yours can't find us some people to speak to. Offer them food but be careful with your movements, they're like to be skittish and possibly violent" he paused and then continued "Oh, and keep an eye out for any invaders, they should be easier to spot" he said in a deadpan voice

"The fellas running at us, waving their swords and screaming, I'm guessing," Gawyn said, though the tone of his voice was strained. He reached for the twin blades at his back, ensuring they were loose in their scabbards. He spurred his reluctant mount ahead along with Maxwell, scanning what was left of the buildings for survivors.

A single tear trickled across Verden's cheek as he rode through the ruins, but he kept a brave expression. "Those animals," he cursed.
He looked to Ser Danwell. "Where do you want me?" he asked. As he spoke, he began to remove the bow from it's strapping at his back. Just in case.

Gawyn spotted movement among the rubble of what appeared to have been a once prosperous inn. Dismounting, he lead his steed forward, stooping and peering into the darkness.

"Go away!" came a cry through a a tiny eye slit. "We don't need any trouble!"

Gawyn released the reins of his horse, and continued forward at a crouch. Reaching slowly for his pack, he pulled out a wrapped package. "We're friends, here to help," he said in what he hoped was a soothing tone. "We just want to know what happened. Here, we have food." He puncuated the last sentance by throwing the small wrapped package onto the dirt, near where the cry had resounded from.

"They will know I talked to you!" came the voice, clearly distinct as a woman's voice now.

Gawyn was confused. "They're still here?" He sighed. "Listen, you don't have to tell me anything you don't want to, but I can't help you if you don't. Either way, the food is yours." He gestured towards the package, casting out with his mind at the same time. He wasnt much of a skinchanger, but he could at least sense any life around him, and a bare hint of their intent.

"Of course they're still here!" said the woman in a muffled cry.
Gawyn felt numerous animals all around him. crows, rats, cats, and dogs abounded, as they did in any city. There were people too.

"I'd best tell the captain," he muttered to himself. He had been under the impression the invaders had gone to meet the Crown forces in battle.
"Come woman, if things are as you say they are, time is wasting! Will you help us? We need to know how many survivors there are. Why havn't you left?"
"Plus," he said with a small smile, "your food is getting cold."

"Seems I'm not half as charming as I thought," he muttered, turning away without another word to the woman. Remounting, he spurred his horse, hoping to get back to the others as quickly as possible. Suddenly he didn't want to be alone in theses damned empty streets.
