"I don't know of Selwyn," Elane said carefully. "But Aranya's...Aranya's alive. My network found her." Her mouth tightened. "But I can't tell you more, Rhodri. Not until I know where the lords of the realm - including you - stand with the Targaryens and the Baratheons." She began to walk away.

"We remember. We are nothing without our bonds, and our vows. We remember."
"That is where I stand."
Rhodri lingers on the battlement, looking out over the dark night.

"We remember," Elane smiled bitterly. "Yes. We should remember." And she vanished into the guests' tower.

As he entered his quarters, Donal laid Addam down gently on his bed and pulled up a chair and a jug of wine from the table, and sat holding Addam's cold, dead hand.
After a few moments, he took a large swig of the sweet red wine and stared at Addam's face. He looked so peaceful. Donal expected his eyes to open and the broad smile to form on Addam's lips, but he knew he would never see that again. Soon tears began to flow, slowly at first, then in torrents as sobs burst forth unwillingly from his lips as all the tension, grief and numbness he had felt broke at long last. He raged, pushing the table roughly on it's side.
He had known!! He had been warned but been too stupid to take the sign for what it was! Gisella's pronouncement from over five months ago floated back into his mind "After the ill wind strikes the north and red sun's keep burns, a rose will wilt and die under a white lion's roar." He had taken the warning to heart, he had seen too many of Gisella's visions come to pass to doubt her, but he had thought first of his brothers and his headstrong cousin. When Spicer had challenged Rindwynd he had feared the worst. He had watched over and warned them but had never thought to warn his own son. Because of his carelessness, Addam was dead! He had known of the boy's eagerness to prove himself, had seen how Kid Death had encouraged him and pushed him on. He had even seen Addam associating himself with the Redfort knights but did nothing - he put it down to childish hero worship. He was a fool!
Donal howled his grief and threw the jug of wine against the wall, smashing it and spraying it's contents. He held his head in his hands and sobbed loudly and uncontrollably for hours.

Elane found Donal's chambers and gave him what comfort she could. Addam had been a sweet, blushing boy. "He is with the gods now. I am so sorry, Donal." Elane cringed at the knowledge that her own cousins had been part of this. "If I had known, I would have stopped them. It was foolish and dangerous." Seeing that he wished to be left alone, she pressed his hand and said, "If there is anything I can do to help, you have only to ask." And she tactfully left.

A raven came directly to Elane's chambers. When she read the letter, her face darkened. Then Elane strode into Rhodri's room. "Aemon lost his temper and dismissed Breyn," she said tersely. "This changes everything."

"Dangerous news." Elane tossed the letter at him. "It's from Elspeth. Apparently Aemon dismissed him for not advising him properly. It's outrageous! And now Baldwin and his friend Piers are both on the small council, with Baldwin replacing Breyn." Elane's mouth twisted in disgust.

"That's three Lannisters on the small council, don't forget, the Master of Ships as well. They might as well put the crown on Baldwin's head. I wonder how it is Baldwin made this happen. Surely he is behind it."

"Oh, I don't doubt it," Elane snorted. "Three Lannisters on the small council and their rule in two of the Six Kingdoms. We must write His Grace and protest. We are too wealthy and powerful an ally for him to ignore. And if Aemon's pride overrules his common sense, we may have to seek out a man who would show more gratitude."

"They do not rule the Riverlands. The Blackwoods do. But they must be mindful that Steffen not usurp their authority. The Worm seems to be surrounding himself with Riverlord allies already."

"Rhodri, the Blackwoods might have been named Lords Paramount of the Riverlands, but Steffen not only got Riverrun, he got Princess Daena. His cousin is the Hand, and his wife's brother is the King. If it came to a struggle for authority before King Aemon, who do you think would win?"
