"Come, let us take a walk along the battlements. I would have our conversation go unheard."

OOC: I'm really sorry at this lateness at replying, I'm using an office computer and my boss keeps calling me away ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) "As you wish, cousin."

OOC: No problem. I'm only coming back to the computer every few minutes to see if there is an update.
IC: Walking along the battlements, far from prying ears, Rhodri opens up to his cousin about his conversation with the Songlord. "Sylas Caron does not think those fools were any mere Stagsmen. He suspects they were Andry and his sister."

"Really?" Elane said quietly. If only you knew, cousin, how right your Songlord is. "Why would he suspect that?"

"They were known to him once. He did not say as much, but it is easy to surmise. So I have little reason to doubt his hunch. The question is, what does this all mean? If they were in hiding, why come out now, and like that? What do they seek to gain?" Rhodri had the look of a confused man.

For a long time, Elane said nothing, merely looked at Rhodri with penetrating eyes. "First, I don't trust in rumors and fanciful speculations that could easily have been brought on by the morbid excitement of the events at this tourney. Or brought on by an excess of ale, it makes no difference. Second, just supposing that Lord Caron was right, the obvious answer would be that the Baratheons are not ready to give up to the dragons."
She did not take her eyes off Rhodri's. "If Prince Andry is alive - and I doubt it, because there have been absurd rumors of Callen for years - then that could mean war in the future, Rhodri. His appearance at the Rock is almost an omen, for since he has arrived fighting and death and murder has broken out. Syward Spicer challenged Rindwynd and was found murdered, Alliser tells me there's bad blood between Garrett and Lord Tallahar. That poor Addam Tyrell was killed in the joust. I can only imagine what dear Ser Donal is going through right now. If we add to the tensions by talking about the return of the Baratheons, we're going to throw the westerlands into chaos."

"I was thinking on that. It is almost as if we all bear a curse. Cursed for oathbreaking. I do think a storm is coming. How high must a wall be to block this wind, I wonder?" Rhodri was drawing pensive.
"Did you know, when I rode for the Reach, I did not even know I was riding for House Targaryen? I thought I was fighting to make Lord Michael King, since he was the better man than Rodrick. I only found out the rebellion was in Aegon's name when his ships sailed into King's Landing, when I was already marching in an army with the Songlord and Kid Death, assaulting Horn Hill."
"What a fool I was to think that a better man deserved to be king. Aegon, Aeron, are either better men than Rodrick? Who knows? They are Hermit-Kings. That was not what I fought for."

"And Aegon was not even properly grateful to us afterwards," Elane agreed, growing angry as she remembered how she had tried to manipulate Princess Daena into Lord Breyn's arms, only to have the slut marry Lord Steffen in the end. "King Aemon is little better. I received a raven from Breyn the other day saying how the king gives him less importance than the others when the council is in session."
"Rodrik was no true warrior, but I remember Callen was. Despite Aegon's dragon, Callen's armies sent thousands of wounded men into the ballroom hospital."

"Oh, they gave me Storm's End, that was gratitude. Storm's End! The greatest castle in Westeros! How could I turn such down? They gave it to me because they knew I was such a loyal fool."

"That's true, and we fought hard for those meager rewards." Elane had her cool composure back now. She thought for a moment before speaking her next words.
"But the question of the Baratheons remains. I personally don't give credence rumors, as you already know, but if the rumors and signs are true, then your great prize is in jeopardy, Rhodri. As is your family's future - the one you were born in and the one you made with Becca. We need to head off disaster before it comes to us; nobody wants another war."

"I fear for my family, my families, it is true. Yohn and Saella. Becca. What legacy can I give them? What honor can I leave them?"
"As for 'heading off' disaster...I have no stomach for the suggestion."

Elane took his hand comfortingly. "Your children will have a legacy, we will make sure of it. But to do that, we have to make some hard choices. If the Stag is back, our alliance with the Tyrells is in trouble. My trade links with Ser Donal are too valuable to allow trouble there. Let us do nothing for the time being. The rumors may be nothing. But if the Baratheons are back...I'm worried more about Callen than the others. He's a very charismatic man, and even as a prisoner he was well liked by all but Maerys. He could sway many lords, if he tried."

"If he lives. I have always wondered, you know that," Rhodri replied. "I shall try and draw the Tyrells closer. Lord Rindwynd will foster his son with me, for a start. He is an honest man, and has made the offer."

"Steffen, at least, will not be quick to bend the knee to a Baratheon," Elane mused. "Neither will Baldwin. The Lannisters will stand by Aemon, at least. But the North and the South, Stark and Martell...those are wild cards entirely."

"House Martell has little need for Stags, now. They have their independence. I indirectly aided that cause when I would not allow my men to invade Dorne, to only guard the Stormlands. What could the Stags offer them they do not have now?"
"As for Baldwin, the only thing I can assure you is that he shall be on the side of the winner, no matter the color of their shield."
