"He's a bloody champion of the Seven. They'd be planting weirwoods in the rubble of this place if he had not offered his protection." Mandon says emphatically, and yet he avoids specifically answering the question. "He'd be here himself, I imagine, but he had a wedding in Oldtown to attend." It seemed to occur to him suddenly that Leyton was a Hightower. "Maybe for a brother of yours, Ser?" "A wedding?" Leyton looked surprised. "I have no brothers, my Lord, perhaps it is one of my cousins you speak of? I am afraid that I have not been kept as informed as my cousins might have desired; I only just disembarked today. My vessel must have arrived scarce hours prior to your own." Leyton appeared thoughtful, glancing over at Septon Gyles briefly before taking the imitative. "I am delighted to hear of Lord Royce's commitment to the Seven, my lord. As a devout individual, I assume he is perfectly willing to harbor our group in his territory? I hope you can also confirm his support for our endeavors to tame the wolves, who presently run wild in the wilderness beyond this harbor."

"The wolves have stood down. My orders are to get the defenses of this city into shape, but not to go after Stark's men unless they break the peace first." Mandon looks around again. "How many fighting men do you have in your group?"

Leyton looked over to Septon Gyles, hoping he could answer Sunderland's query.

"We have nearly a hundred and fifty fighting men, though they came in small groups," said Septon Gyles. "My own band of fifty is mostly septons and sparrows with old or homemade weapons, as I told young Sir Leyton. We're about two hundred, all told."
The big man sighed. "I thought we would be participating in a grand quest for our Faith but the truth is very different, it seems."

Leyton replied, putting on a show of confidence. "Our situation would no doubt be improved even further if Lord Royce were to assist our cause. Any weapons and armor that the Vale might lend us would be used to great affect, I assure you." Leyton offered solemnly to Lord Sunderland.

"And what is your cause, now that there's to be no war?" Lord Mandon asks.

"And what is your cause, now that there's to be no war?" Lord Mandon asks. "It was the High Septon who called us to arms." Leyton replied, firmly but not rudely. "It is he who shall issue the orders for our disbandment. Seeing as we have not received any such orders from his person, the faithful must assume that we remain in conflict with the enemies of the Seven."

"Well then," Mandon grunts, "I'm sure you meant you and your friends were just concerned as men of faith and misspoke, is all. Seeing as if the High Septon is issuing battle orders now, well that would be against the law for you both."

Seeing as if the High Septon is issuing battle orders now, well that would be against the law for you both." "Perhaps I misspoke." Leyton allowed, but he did not back down. "What I should have said is that the High Septon has not asked us to desist in our teaching the North the error of declaring war on the faithful."

"So the two hundred of you will... burn down Winterfell?" Mandon looked amused at the notion.

Leyton looked anything but amused. "We will do what is necessary. Each of us travelled a considerable distance to fulfill our duty. More will come, once we enjoy success in the field. Evidently we will not begin by sieging winterfell, but by committing ourselves to winnable engagements. Winterfell will follow, once more are made appreciative of the value answering the call of the faith."

Sunderland lost his amusement as well. "Your fight is already won, Ser," the islander lord says sharply, "Lord Manderly and his people have the right to worship the Gods, and will not thank you for bringing more trouble down upon them."

"We answer not to Lord Manderly but to a higher authority." Leyton replied. "The head of our faith has not backed down and nor shall we until he does."

"You are on Lord Manderly's lands, which are now also Lord Royce's lands, and I have a writ granting me authority to act in his name. While you are here you will follow their laws," Mandon says sharply. "I am sorry that the High Septon does not personally inform you of all his decisions; I imagine he has more pressing matters to attend to. He has no need to call back your two hundred because everything he called you for has been accomplished."

"Nothing he called us for has been accomplished." Leyton countered, his voice growing more forceful with each exchange. "Did Lord Royce punish Lord Stark's insolence? No. Thus the cause for which we assembled has not been fulfilled. If Lord Royce is the champion of the Seven that you have painted him as, then he will assist us in performing this task."
