"Well... his grace could not have meant for Lady Mariya to be made a knight. Such a thing... has never been done, as best I know. However, seeing Mariya's bravery, perhaps what his grace intended to affirm was his blessing... upon an enterprise Lady Mariya has been considering... A religious... order... for women." Finn watched their eyes, wasn't sure he liked what he saw, but decided to proceed anyway. "Land could be found for a small building somewhere... very remote... where Lady Mariya could fulfill her desire to instruct young women in religious propriety, in her own... unique style. The King's dubbing with his sword was largely symbolic, because Lady Mariya's describes her order as being... like knights. As a metaphor. Obviously, because its a religious institution, celibacy would be required."

Garnet asked, "So you wish to end the engagement?"

"As much as it would pain me," Finn replied, "Mariya's dream and her religious piety obviously comes first, and I think it honorable to support her, and not force her to marry me rather than pursue her devotions" he replied.

Mariya said "My lord, I can think of nobody I'd rather marry than Finn, but I do have my dream. I would love a chance to achieve it before I put my mind to marriage and such matters."

Garnet nodded, "I had already said you were free to end the engagement. You may go Finn." He looked to Mariya, "I am sorry for you my girl. You are the lion in the cage at the meanagrie who thinks he is the king of the crowd infront of him, when he is just a joke."

She lifted her gaze to look at him.
"I'm no joke, my lord. I take my goals seriously. I wish only to bring honour to my sex and to the realm."

"I do not know how you are going to do either now. You are tainted." Garnet replied.

"My lord," Finn said towards the door, as he had been edging slowly away, "She killed the lion mauling your son. A beast which had butchered numerous villagers. Michael and I both would like be dead without her...As unfortunate and inconvenient this business with the King was, surely her deed is worth something "

"She is not to be punished Finn. Not by me. The King has done her a great disservice, and you know it as well as I." Garnet looked at him sadly.

Finn frowned but nodded, "As you say milord."

Garnet kept looking at Finn, "Tell her. She may hear it from you."

"I don't understand why," Mariya said. "And I don't think I'm tainted. I did nothing wrong. And neither did the King."

"Being... knighted," Finn said, eeking out the words, "by the King, leaves you in a position of limbo. Men who don't mock you, will be offended. You won't be allowed to be a true knight, and no one will treat you like a woman anymore."

"But...but..."
She hadn't thought about that, only about how it might help her further her dreams. Her cheeks paled and her eyes widened as she glanced from Finn to Lord Hightower and back to Finn again. Then back to Lord Hightower.
"But what do I do now, then?"

Garnet said, "There is little we can do. We can not over turn the King's decision."
