Finn shook his head, "it's not the weight that pierces," He said firmly. He stood and swung the blade, and grimaced. "Inelegant." he said. "Blades don't need to be elegant," Mariya said. "I was told than in battle, it's mostly hacking at other people. There wouldn't be time to look elegant. But...I saw a picture of a Braavosi sword in a book. That looked elegant because the blade was so slim. Maybe you should become a bravo," she teased.

Finn laughed, "I'd rather be a Faceless Man." he replied. "Now that... is elegant."

Mariya looked surprised.
"Is it? Why do you say that?"

Finn laughed, "Well, why start huge wars and make all the small folk suffer, and wives and children mourn when you could resort to only the most limited amount of violence, with no possibility of failure, in order to solve a problem? I'm convinced one should always use the smallest possible tool that's likely to be effective."

"I don't think assassination is right," she said. "Because a Faceless Man has to do the job he's told to do and that means he won't assess whether or not it's right to kill the person."

Finn shook his head, "And the knight on the battlefield assesses whether its right to burn down the village his lord has ordered burned?" Finn asked. "I'm not saying its wrong, mind you. In war some times you have to do such things, but how is that more right? If the problem is among those with power, I'd rather see them harming each other and no one else. Quicker and cleaner that way."

"Perhaps. But what if it was us in power? Would you think a Faceless Man justified if he was set upon you?" Mariya challenged. "I didn#t know knights burn down villages though. I thought they just killed the men on the other side."

Finn shook his head, "They do." He said sternly. "And they rape women as well, as to your other question... I suppose if I was worth the cost of a Faceless Man I must have been." He laughed and shook his head, "not much chance of that though."

"Maybe one day," she said.
Her eyes widened in horror.
"Knights are charged to protect the weak, especially women. Wouldn't they be put to death if they raped women?"

"A Lord's knights are his strength. All his power rests on that ultimately. You think a lord is going to cut off his own right arm because a few women get violated when a village is razed or a city is sacked?" Finn replied, "They don't."

"But that's horrid and cruel," she said. "Why should women be treated like that? It has to stop."

"Well it won't," Finn said with finality.

"But it must."
Her grip tightened on her practice blade and she itched to swing it and hit something.
"If women never stand up for themselves, of course it will never stop."

"How can they stand up for themselves?" Finn replied. "Except for a few special ones, like yourself, they can't defend themselves. So they have no choice but to rely on men to stand up for them. Men who may see blood red if the women in their lives are violated, but they think nothing of doing it to their enemies. See? And you're right back where you started. Don't try to change the way of the world Mariya, it's a sucker's game. Just get along in it as best you can."

She sighed and shook her head.
"I don't think I could stand by and watch that happen to other women. Don't you see, Finn? If I'm one of the few women who can stand up for herself, shouldn't I help others too? It would be wicked to be selfish. If I could find other women who feel the same, we could do a great deal of good."
