Vivinane's laughter was loud and bright.
"Empty? Don't be foolish, husband. You'll have my brothers and their children here, and darling Edric too. Oh...I wish Eleyna could be persuaded to take the boy with her. I love him dearly but he is her son, and he barely knows her."

Merlyn nodded slowly, and frowned, "If she does not want him, she does not deserve him."

Viviane's eyes narrowed in sorrow.
"It's not a question of wanting. When she left, the boy reminded her so much of Lucas, and I can understand that. Lancel reminds me so much of you, love. I am not the type to leave Ghost Hill wilingly, yet someone must do our business at Sunspear, so it's just as well that Eleyna is willing, but I wonder, ought I to suggest Princess Emelia take him on as a squire to one of her knights. That way,, he could be with his mother they might grow close."

"A mother's duty is to her children, much like a Lady's duty is to her holdings" Merlyn replied, "You have not once avoided the heavy yoke of your responsibilities, yet at the first bit of discomfort she left the boy behind."

"It was I who sent her, though mayhaps I should have insisted that she take Edric and his nurse with her. But I saw my daughter's pain and thought to spare her. And yet you are right, my love. She loved him so much before his father died."
Viviane could not rid herself of the guilt she felt, torn between her daughter and grandson and feeling she could not force Eleyna to heal the rift. It would never work until it was done willingly.
"Would you not have felt pain if I had died, and you had to look upon Eleyna every day?"

"I would have, but even then my love for her would hvae been too strong to abandon her to her own fate." Merlyn replied.

"It's not abandonment, not turly. Edric has us, and he has the other children to play with. So, tell me, how would you reconcile the two, my love. My belief is that it must be done and sooner is better than later. But if we force the matter, it will breed resentment."

"Have her return. It is time she conquers the fear within her. She is still your heir, can she be allowed to hide in Sunspear." Merlyn replied.

"A fair point," Viviane alowed. "I will speak to her when I arrive at Sunspear, but we must have somebody to look after our affairs at Emelia's court. If not Eleyna, who would you suggest?"

Merlyn placed a finger along his nose as he thought, "Ask me again when Eleyna has agreed to return, and I will find you an answer."

"I will do so, but we must tread carefully, husband. Years of grief will not be done away with so easily. I rather think I should find Eleyna another husband. I've a suspicion she may have taken lovers at Sunspear - indeed I am almost certain of it - and I'd rather have her safely married, wouldn't you?"

Merlyn nodded, and replied, "Its her duty."

Viviane drank some more wine and smiled at her husband.
"So it is, and Eleyna is too passionate a woman to be content with soliuide. She needs another man , one who will not be a fleeting memory of a night or even a few weeks, to give her something to focus on. I want her to have what we have, my love. I know you think Eleyna is wrong about Edric, and so do I, but she suffered much at an age she should not have had to do so. And she is our beloved daughter. Her happiness is important to me."

Merlyn smiled and touched her cheek, "You worry about her happiness and I will worry about her duty, and we will land somewhere safetly in the middle."

Vivinae grinned, already anticipating their farewell.
"So we will. Duty alone makes for a cold bedfellow and misery during the day and is best combined with pleasure. But I know it's hard for you to see it that way. Men don't like to thnk of their daughters abed with a lover. That is right and proper, so I think we each have the better roles for our person."
