Joanna rides as hard and as fast as she can, with Aalina not far behind. Two of the children are on Joanna's horse, and the youngest on Aalina's. They take several turns off the path, and are soon well into the darkness of the forest. Thankfully they have lost the sound of horseshoes behind them.

Only when she was sure they were not being followed did Joanna slow her horse and look over her shoulder at her eldest daughter. Eleyna was clinging to her waist, white-faced but outwardly calm. Cassie sat in front of Joanna, in tears. Joanna shushed her then turned to Aalina, who had Silvana with her.
"Are you alright, Aalina?" She asked.

Aalina nodded, her breathing was irregular. She hugged Silvana to her.
"Are you Princess?"
Aalina slid off her horse and held her arms out for Cassana.

Joanna eased tghe sobbing Cassana into Aalina's arms.
"I'm fine, but shaken."
She realised that she had no idea how the men were coping.
"i wish we knew what was happening."
She got down from her mount and attempting to help Eleyna but her firstborn shook her head and jumped down by herself.
"I'm fine, Mother."
Joanna nodded and turned back to Aalina.
"And now we are lost. I never rode about the Vale much."

Aalina looked up at Joanna.
"Dont think of the men. We will find our way then we can think about what happened."
She turned her attention back to Cassana.
"Is anyone hurt at all?"

"No, but I scared," Cassana whispered.
"Me too," Eleyna said.
"No like this," Silvana added. "Wanna go home."
None of the girls were hurt and neither was Joanna. She chexcked the horses to make sure they weren't injured but they looked tired.
"I think we should rest a little," she said. "One of us should keep guard while the other looks after the girls."

Aalina nodded.
"Rest Princess, I can keep guard. I dont like it either girls, but we have to make the best of it. None of us are hurt and we are together."

"Wanna go home," Silvana insisted.
"Me too," Cassana said.
"Sssh, we can't go home yet," Joanna said. "Let's play a game. I will choose something I can see and tell you the first letter and you all have to guess. Aalina can play too, if she wants to."
She looked up at the septa but made sure the blade she always carried on long journeys was cto hand, but sheathed so none of the girls cut themselves.
She tethered her horse and sat down, gathering the girls about her

Aalina nodded.
"Give me that Princess." She held her hand out for the blade. "Alright I can start. I see something begining with a T."

Joanna handed over the blade with a feeling of loss. It was the only thing either one of them had to protect all five of them.
"Tree!" Eleyna cried.
"Trunk," said Cassana, pointing to a tree trunk.

Eleyna gazed around thoughtfully.
"Something beginning with C."
"Cloud?" Cassan asked.
"Yes. Your turn, Cassie."
Cassie gazed around for several minutes, twice as long as her sister ghad taken to choose. Then, eventually, her eyes lit up.
"B."

"No," Cassana.
"Baby?" Eleyna guessed, indicating Silvana, despite the fact that their youngest sister had outgrown babyhood.
"No."
"Bark?" Joanna asked; she was holding Silvana who was dozing in her arms.
"No. Aalina, go again," Cassana said.
