"The girls are fine, Aalina too. She's a good septa and knows many things we lesser mortals do not. Shall I bring the girls to see you, cousin?"

"I don't know," She laughed nervously, "I'm not very good with children. How old are they?"

"Eight and six and two," Joanna said at once.

"Oh, and they're learning to do dancing and such? That was my favourite when I was younger. We could all meet together at some time."

Joanna smiled.
"That would be pleasant. Silvana is too young to learn dancing but Cassana and Eleyna are learning. Eleyna is quite good but Cassie feels like she's always in her sister's shadow so she's finding it hard. That makes her resentful, but I'm sure she'll do better when she's a bit older."

"I'll be glad to meet them then. And I will introduce you to a squire I've made friends with, he fought in a duel recently. I've never seen anything like it."

Joanna frowned.
"Why did a squire have to fight a duel?"

"He and another squire had a rivalry, and it escalated. Eventually they fought a duel. It was the first time I witnessed such a thing, and it is quite scary. Not to mention the blood."

"I can imagine. What was the rivalry over?" Joanna asked.

"Tyrek Hardying is of a lesser house than the late Boris Waynwood and Master Boris would hurl insult and harsh words and when they came to blows at one time I sought to intervene, but Tyrek was distracted by me, and halted his blows. However, Boris took the opportunity to pummel Tyrek incessantly for almost a minute. It was horrifying. Eventually Tyrek had enough and as I understand it they agreed to a duel to settle the matter between them. I didn't think it would be with live steel however. Tyrek is brave."

"Brave but foolish. I wonder why men feel they must settle disputes with steel when other ways might prevail."

"What other ways are those? A duel is the most honourable form to settle a dispute and it is sanctified by the Faith."

"So it is, but men can die for foolish reasons when they duel. It might have been simpler to keep that pair apart until they are old enough to learn better sense. Duelling has its place, I grant you, but it can be used to resolve silly squabbles too, and I don't thnk that's right."

"Men die in foolish wars all the time, at least in a duel it is one man verse one man and both agree to it, they have a choice. Besides, it is sometimes entertaining to watch and it is good to see honourable men win."

"True enough. I don't object to duels when the cause is just and they do save more men dying than would be the case in a war but I do think the wrong man can win sometimes. Do you not see it?"
