Joanna shrugged.
"i barely know either one of them so I am in no place to comment. Perhaps Calla is cold, though. I had that impression from my conversation with Daeron. I do feel sorry for the girl, mind you, but we women have to make the best of our marriages even when they are not what we would have chosen. Not everyone is as lucky as I."

Ary nodded her head, "She should have come here to King's Landing, we could have talked to her and tried to resolve the issue amongst us ladies. Hm, this is the difficulty of arranged marriages. I suppose it will take them more years to grow together, though they both have to change their attitude." She resumed eating her pear. "Have you given thought to our discussion from some time ago, have you seen any men that are worthy?"

"Lord Redfort is a good man but there are few enough others," Joanna sighed. "I'm sorry, Arya. I have not really had time to think on the matter, what with all that has occured. Have you seen anyone to your own liking yet?"

"I'm not too certain. There is an affectionate knight, the mystery knight from the tourneys, Ser Aiden Sand, but he's a bastard, so I am not sur ehow to feel about that. I have not spoken to Lord Redfort, but perhaps I should be introduced to him sometime." She looked at Joanna for an opinion.

"I could introduce the two of you if you like," Joanna offered. "As to Ser Aiden, naturally I think you shold look higher than a bastard. I'll wager the man has little to offer besides good looks and a reputation as a tourney champion."

"Yes if you could do that that would be kind of you." She nibbled on her pear in thought. "Ser Aiden is kind and goodhearted, from my small time with him anyway. I will give him a chance should he be forthcoming, but I don't know how far any affair can go beyond us spending time together. He is torn between choosing a position in the Kingsguard and making his own way in life."

Joanna dangled a scrap of lace for the kitten to play with now it had woken up properly. It batted at the material.
"It would be difficult for you to marry a man who ahd to make his own way in life," she said. "And if the man is torn between that and the Kingsboard, I think he might have trouble dedicating himself to you."

"I don't disagree. He would have to demonstrate that he can provide for me. I don't like travelling that much. And I would want my children to have a name that can be respected. Oh how cold do I sound!? Would that if he were a Lord or some Prince from the Free Cities it would be a perfect dream..."

Joanna patted Arya's arm.
"You are not cold, cousin. You are merely being practical, as you should be. I would never contemplate wedding a man who has no lands of his own."
She stopped suddenly and looked hard at her cousin.
"You haven't fallen in love with him, have you?"

"No, at least I don't think so. I do have some feelings for him. But I don't know if that is love. He makes me feel wonderful, like I'm the only girl that he has eyes for. Is this the same for you and Jon?"

"Yes, and I know it's the truth," Joanna answered smugly. "I know that other women have thrown themselves at Jon and he has refused them. That is linked to love but it is not the whole of it. Do you feel a tenderness for him also?"

She smiled, "Well I doubt he'd want to face you or the king's wrath should he be unfaithful, but he has no reason to be. You are one of the beauties of the entire known realm." She tapped the side of her mouth, "What do you mean by tenderness?"

"Does Ser Aiden make you want to protect him from harm, even though he can take care of himself?"

"How would I protect him from harm? I don't really have any power." She looked a tad bit confused.

"No, I don;'t mean that you will do it," Joanna explained. "Only that you want to. That is what love is, wanting to keep the one you care for safe even when you know you have no power to do so."
