Rhaenys arrived, in company with two of her Queensguard. She asked to see Selwyn,

Selwyn was lying on his cot, a hand behind his head. He stood slowly, until he was looking down at her, and then he bowed slightly. His dark eye slowly studied the two guards before resting on the Queen. "Yes?"

Rhaenys felt awkward standing in front of Selwyn, all the time remembering their experience in the King's Tower at Castle Black. Her cheeks were very slightly flushed as she looked at him. Half of her hoped he'd change his mind and get on with the business of their personal relations
"I wanted to talk to you about the military situation. It's time you gave me some more information," she said. "A queen should know what her soldiers are doing. First, though, I have two more slots on the Queensguard to fill and no notion who to fill them with. I hoped you'd assist me. You know better than me who is skilled with a blade and who can be trusted."

Selwyn nodded, "I will draw up a list. Have you chosen a Lord commander? If you have not I will include some of the better strategists from our force as well." His studied her cheeks, and then he let it drop to the curves of her breast, before returning to the Queen's face.
"My scouts report no danger between here and Winterfell." Selwyn continued in his gravelly, expressionless voice. "The Van has moved toward the Keep. It is being held by a small force, and both a Wolf and Lion fly above the keep."
He coughed and drank some wine. He seemed ill at ease with this much speaking, "South of Winterfell there does seem to be more confusion. And rumors say a Black Lizard and Blue Towers fly over Moat Cailin." He licked his lips and pondered that for a moment, "There will be close to twenty thousand arriving at Winterfell in the next couple of weeks. It seems every Northern Lord, Lady, and Commoner marches to meet us."

Her blush deepened when she saw him eyeing her chest but she did not comment She'd already told him that she'd take him to her bed if he wished it. Let him suggest it, if that was what he wanted.
"Good. We should make haste to join them. We will not be able to keep a large force at Winterfell forever but we shall make it our base of operations for a time. And to answer your question, no, I've not chosen a Lord Commander. I'd hoped to fill the last two places before examining the skills of all seven candidates more properly. I will make my decision then. But why include strategists, Selwyn? A Queensguard need only be loyal and skilled at arms. Strategy is for my generals and lords."

Selwyn replied, "Not strategists, but leaders. The Seven are only the leaders and the best of your guard. The Lord Commander must prepare guard rotations, keep your guards trained, and assign contingents to travel with you and yours. There are couple hundred other details, but it is important for him to understand these things."

She'd never thought of it that way. Her mother had only ever talked of the Kingsguard - Quenesguard now - as the finest swords in the Seven Kingdoms, men who were as famed for their weapon skills as their chastity and white cloaks. But then Saella had never actually had to deal with them herself and Selwyn had. It made sense that he'd know the details.
"As you will. I know I can trust you to handle those details appropriately. How soon can you give me the names of those you recommend? Could you get them to be by the time we reach Winterfell?"

Selwyn stared at her and replied, "You will have a list tomorrow." He stepped closer to her, and he reached out to brush a strand of her hair out of her face.

She felt her pulse race at the intimacy of his touch. She was still uncomfortable being this close to him, particularly after their first attempt at true intimacy had gone so badly awry, despite the excellent beginning.
"Thank you," Rhaenys said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You are most efficient. I have a...suggestion, about the army."

Selwyn leaned closer, and inhaled slowly. "What is your suggestion?"

She steeled herself for another possible argument with him.
"You were right when you said I should stay away from battle because I have other responsibilties but I cannot ask men to die for me if I hide like some mouse. I have a notion to command the reserve."

Selwyn listened to her and replied simply, "No." His gaze moved back to her cleavage, and his hand rose up to grasp her breast in his firm, maligned hand.

She put her hand over his, holding it still. I'm glad he wants to progress things on a personal level but he could have chosen a better moment than now.
"Selwyn, I would be within my rights to insist on taking the command," she warned him. "I gave you the military command, yes, but I believe I still have the right of final say if I wish it."

Selwyn made eye contact with her and replied, "I have men more qualified, and I will not risk a single soldier of mine with out good reason. If I could put a man with you that you would obey perhaps I would let you. We both know that any man I leave would be honor bound to obey you." His fingers tightened on her breast in a gentle squeeze.
