The looked Maekar gave Ragnor was distinctly unfriendly. He was suspicious by nature and he knew that some of the other Ironborn had given Rhaenys cause for concern. Why should he trust this man.
"I do have the queen's ear," he said. "What of it? Are you seeking preference for an audience?"

"I am. A matter of those disloyal to her already beginning their plotting. I think I can prove myself rather useful, and would simply like to offer my services."

Ser Mearn looked up on the woman on the horse, and was suprised to see the princess.
"S..ser Mearn Merryweather, Princess Alyssane" he answered with a bow with his head.

She smiled kindly. "Tell me your story, good ser,"

"Not much to tell, my princess. I grew up at Longtable, squired for a knight, earned my own spurs, barely survived the Long Winter, barely survived Goldengrove and now barely survived this battle. Seems like I have done nothing but held and swung a sword since I became a man. I hope that I will get the chance to a long life of boredom from now on."
A Targaryen soldier walked past the princess and Ser Mearn. He offered the man a smile, and a thank you before he continued to march on.

Maekar considered the man.
"Your services will be most welcome, of course. Queen Rhaenys will be kind to any man who helps her deal with her enemies. I can bring you to her tonight if you wish?"

The Princess glanced at the soldier, recognizing one of her mother's sworn men. "Looks to me like you saved his life. Why so modest?"

"Of course. Shall I be ready just after we set up camp?"

A heavyset, balding man half jogs towards the column, panting every step of the way. He stops to wipe a sheen of sweat from his brow, then walks the rest of the way to the column. The round wildling spots a man in black on a horse and an ironman on foot.
"Fine ser knight!" Nute the wildling calls out, showing filed teeth, "Might I make an offer to purchase your horse?"

The Princess glanced at the soldier, recognizing one of her mother's sworn men. "Looks to me like you saved his life. Why so modest?" "In war there is no such thing as glory, that was something Ser Grant always used to say. I saw comrades of war in trouble, so I acted to save them, that is nothing to brag about. It's not like I saved you or the queen, my princess."

Alysanne smiled. "Do you have a family, Ser Mearn?"

Maekar was on the brink of agreeing to Ragnor's request when the wildling showed up.
"Certainly not!" He snarled. "I am a member of the Queen's own household. Get your own bloody horse!"

"No, my princess. I have two brothers and a sister, but no wife or children."

"I think you would do a good job in the Queensguard. Even if you're not looking for glory.. please consider, at the least,"

Ser Mearn's eyes grew wide and he felt his face go a little red.
"Me, protecting the Queen, Princess Alysanne. Why would the queen even have heard of me, I am sure there are more famous men that she has in mind already."
