"What law is there but the law of the King? Sure, tradition states that any man may take the black, but even some of your honorable ancestors have gone against tradition."

Rickon seemed unnerved. "I don't know. Lord Alex, Lord Benfry, your thoughts?"

"Prince Avery has a big mouth, I doubt he would accept the offer if it was presented to him. He would start talking until their was no recourse but execution. I am not sure that as King you must offer to allow a guilty party to take the Black but if the accused were to ask for it I think it would be wrong to rebuke him."

Benfry shifted uncomfortably on his seat "Despite his actions, I still do not believe Prince Avery would move against you sire. He has been....zealous in seeking his rights as Prince of Dragonstone, but does such merit a death sentence or exile? Lady Barclay was not harmed. I believe that strong censure and reminder of the Prince's duties may serve for now. Although I do agree his taste for power is disturbing but as far as the law goes, I am not certain we have enough to seek a death mark"

"Lord Benfry, what is the usual punishment for kidnapping or for piracy?" Rickon asked.

Benfry thought for a moment "For piracy amongst smallfolk, a hefty fine or loss of fingers for a serious crime. For nobles, again depending on the crime, seizure of lands or property to recompense those afflicted. Kidnapping is the much more serious offense, it'd be the Black or hard labour for smallfolk, for nobles...well, they make their own arrangements with the family involved usually"

"I had no idea our laws on such offenses were quite so lenient." Rickon said, chewing on his lip thoughtfully.

Alexander cringes, he hated to be the bad guy but he had sort of earned a reputation for blackness so he might as well embrace it. "There has been a continuing example of leniency that has promulgated the court for sometime. While I do not believe that every action should merit the death penalty, Lords have gotten the idea that they can do what ever the hell they please without consequence. Andry marches on Kingslanding, he gets the black, the Dornish march with him and suffer the inconvenience of a wedding. The Martells and Riverlands rebel and the Riverlands is hit hard economically but no heads roll, and while the consequences were more severe for Dorne it was only because of stubborn obstinacy or they would of gotten a quick rebuke as well. People have not been held accountable for their actions and it is a dangerous precedent to set. Prince Avery is an idiot, but he is one that has broken serious laws and needs a tough punishment to demonstrate to all that the Iron throne will not have its vassals making a mockery of its laws and decrees."
"We have to decide to take a stand or the Lords will never know how far they can go," Alexander sits down having spoken his piece.

"Let us not burn Dragonstone to the ground just yet Lord Irwyn, it has some... historical value." Rickon smiled slightly, to weaken the rebuke.
"Do you have a proposal, a middling point between Lord Benfry's suggestion and simply having him executed because he annoys us?"

"As he has spent most of his time enriching himself and his own lands selfishly, perhaps we can offer him penance by using his construction skills and dragons to rebuild the Septs of Westeros. The High Septon has said he was interested in providing greater influence in the North so perhaps Prince Avery can use some of those skills at fortifying the Dragonstone Harbor to do some good for the people and church of our kingdom." Alexander says ignoring the rolling eyes of his friend Lord ColdIron.
"It is a compromise but one that I think is adequate punishment for his selfishness, providing some good to the realm at someone else's expense and avoids having to kill one of your relatives. It also pulls him away from his power base so he is less likely to cause trouble. That is my only suggestions your grace."

Rickon sighed. "I shall think on it. Lord Benfry and Lord Alexander, you shall be present when we have our conversation, and based on his degrees of contrition, we shall come to a decision."
