"So what thoughts? The evidence suggests his guilt so he will likely ask for trial by combat, although I doubt he is courageous enough to do it on his own, we probably should have a champion ready if he requests so their is no delay. He will undoubtedly whine and try and explain his way out of the situation with a bunch of auroch dung."

"Well you could do it yourself Lord Hand. Or our Lord Regent the Lord Commander of the Kings Guards. I would even fight the man if his Grace desires it."

"It is customary for the Kingsguard to defend the Crown's honor in such cases, but I don't think Lord Benfry would be the right choice." Said Rickon quietly.

"Well then I guess the Lord Commander can make a suitable choice among his men."

"Yes they are all fine men."

"I have faith in the Seven, but would anyone be surprised if they turned on us again? It is known that several traitors to the crown have walked away unharmed and left dead loyalists in their wake. I don't suggest allowing Avery trial by combat given the nature of his crime."

"Unless I am mistaken... Prince Avery has had a trial hasn't he Lord Benfry?" Rickon asked.

Durran nodded as if to say, "Yes, he has."

Benfry nodded "And I am the only judge who was present to still be on this council" he replied quietly "And my feeling was that Avery was guilty, of the kidnap charge if nothing else. He seized shipping on a pretext and either allowed his bannerlords to plot a fake Adrian Sunglass to destabilise House Barclay or actively agreed to such an arrangement. I would have ruled as such had the King not requested a private audience with Avery to see if there was any way to salvage the situation" he glanced across at Rickon "And should trial by combat be necessary, I of course stand ready to stand as champion. Or if not I, Ser Elwood Mooton of the Kingsguard is near as formidable" he gave a slight smile in jest

Erik Coldiron coughed, "What am, tits on a bull? I was there too milord Benfry."
Rickon ignored the jape. "Is another trial necessary for justice Lord Benfry, or was the matter decided?"

Benfry twitched a smile at Erik "Maybe I should have said only impartial judge left. I believe you'd just have gutted them there and then. Something to be said about the swiftness of ironborn justice I suppose" turning to the King he replied "In so far as I was concerned your majesty, Prince Avery was guilty. I was perhaps unconvinced of the need for exile or the death sentence at the time, but subsequent events after the trial are beginning to make me feel that Prince Avery will be a thorn in your side for many years unless plucked now"

Durran nodded, "I firmly agree with the Lord Regent."

"Being irritating to the crown is no crime, regardless of how irritating." Rickon said, gritting his teeth. "Are we on good footing of law or not?"

"He was found guilty of all the charges against him was he not? At the very least the punishment for Avery must be to take the black, but I don't see that as a safe option. Torrhen Keath was presented with the same and we saw what happened to him...perhaps Avery, Andry and Horas would meet up. Three traitors living "free"."

"That does... not seem wise." Rickon conceded, "Yet the law states that a man may take the black, regardless of his crime. I see we have no choice but to allow it if he desires it."
