Gareth gave another bark of laughter laced with sarcasm. "Then know your place here in the Far Reach, girl. Seeing that we're establishing our credentials then, I am a knight, a Lord, a Hightower, heir to the Far Reach and a six year veteran of the Stepstones war." replied Gareth with an amused twinkle appearing in his eye.
"Your better in every way"

"I shall stay where I please." replied Gareth lounging back in his seat and crossing his arms behind his head, a broad insolent grin breaking out on his face.
"And may I say, such charming language in front of our honored guests from a fourteen old maiden. It appears I was not wrong after all."

Gareth continued to smile insolently at the girl, occasionally leaning forward to take a sip of wine. The Lord of Gale's Keep had younger sisters who had had their moments while this girl's age, but rarely had he met such a self-assured, self centred fourteen year old. Typical haughty Lannister he supposed. His mother had often spoken disparagingly about the girl's grandfather. They had the gold but not the blood she had often opined. He could not help but agree with her.

Bayard drinks his wine; that was still enjoyable, at least. "We are in Hightower's hall," Bayard says into the next break in conversation, "And as Lord Gareth's house is kind enough to host us with this fine meal, it may behoove you to speak more courteously to him. But as for myself, Lord Gareth, I took no offense from the Lady's words. A bit of frank conversation can be refreshing on occasion."

But after a moment Lord Hightower approached. He had heard snatches of the argument and was disinclined to allow it to continue. He had accepted Gareth's quarrelsome nature, and loved his brother regardless, but he didn't wish to offend anyone who had come for the tourney. He had no great love for the Lannisters, of course, but there was Lord Royce to consider - he didn't want the Master of Laws to think badly of his house. Though it amused him to see a young maiden arguing with Gareth, this was hardly the proper place for it.
"Please, I want no quarrels in my hall," he said smoothly. "Gareth, Lady...Sansa? Will both of you not drink a toast to peace and agree to speak of better things? Lord Royce, I am sure you will join me in a drink, at the least. We've many fine vintages I would be pleased to share with my guests."

"Of course," Bayard agreed, raising his glass and drinking. He decides to change the subject before another shouting match has the chance to flare up. "I wonder, Lord Gwayne, might I visit the archives of the Citadel before I depart? You may find it a strange request, but I shall have my scribe to read to me." He gestures vaguely at his manservant.

"Of course. I am quite happy to arrange that on your behalf," said Gwayne. "I am sure the good maesters can have no reason to object." His tone indicated that he would have words with them if any did. "But may I ask what kind of books you hope to find? I am not particularly bookish myself, but I would be happy to escort you, and perhaps I can direct your servant to the right books."

"It is more a general curiosity," Bayard replies, "I shall have to see if anything piques my interest when I arrive. I would not want to bore you with such a dull morning, though I promise I shall be better company in the afternoon," Bayard says with mild self-deprecation.

"As you wish. I merely wish to assure myself that the maesters are taking good care of my guest before I leave you in their hands. I shan't intrude, of course. I have many things to attend to regarding the tourney. But I hope you find something of interest."

Gareth ignored his brother and the insolent Lannister girl. He turned to Lord Bayard.
"Very well Lord Bayard. If you took no offense at the girl's words then so be it. You are more gracious than I. Nevertheless it was ill-mannered. That she cannot understand that, is in my view a poor reflection on her upbringing. I shall say no more on the matter."

"As do I," Bayard replies to Gwayne. Turning to Gareth, "Mayhaps it was, but let us leave it in the past. I understand you are a skilled jouster, Gareth. I am sure it would please my niece to have her groom crown her the Queen of Love and Beauty at the events."

"Of course you may," Gwayne agreed. "Tomorrow might serve. Perhaps my sister Isabel would like to go with you. She's older than you to be sure. And there's my sister Rohanne too, who is to marry Benin Tully during the festivities. I can provide a suitable escort, of course, I would be happy to lead the party myself, of course, if time permits."

"I joust well enough." admitted Gareth to Bayard. "However there are many who are more skilled than I and many of them are sure to compete."
He lifted the wine cup to his lips. "But If I am fortunate enough to win the event, then it would give me no greater pleasure than to crown Jennalynn the Queen of Love and Beauty."

"I do," Gwayne replied. "I am fond of riding and it makes good sense to hunt whilst riding, does it not? Besides, I was at war for a long time, and often had to supplement rations with hunting."

If Gwayne was surprised, he hid it well. He was fond of hawking, however. "Perhaps we should. I will be happy to consider arranging a hawking party, so long as it does not intervene with the tourney itself," he replied. "I am sure I can find enough guests keen on hawking to make a good party of it. And you will need a chaperone, my lady."
