"Saving my son is no small task." Garnet replied. "Well if there is nothing else." He turned and slipped from the room easily not waiting for them to say anything.

Finn turned towards Mariya and raised his eyebrow.

She felt awkward as she looked at him, still reeling from Lord Hightower's suggestion.
"That was...odd," she said. "I didn't expect that at all. Did you?"

"I expected something like that," Finn said with a nod," Although I admit, I did not expect that he would decide on the spot that I ought to be married to someone... well like you."

She was speechless for a moment as she tried to work out if he meant that as an insult or a compliment.
"Um...no. Is that a bad thing, Finn? I won't mind if you tell Lord Hightower you can't do it, but I thought we get along well enough. I didn't think you..um...thought badly of me for being different to most girls? Not like some."

Finn shook his head, "I was not intending to offend, I meant simply because our family backgrounds are... similar. If I were him, I'd have selected a woman whose family was loyal, and a man for you, the better to bind us to him. While I confess I did not think of you in those terms, I can think of no particular reason to object." "

"Nor me," she confided. "I used to dream of not marrying at all, but I don't think that's possible unless I were to become a septa. And I've realised I don't want that either."
She paused and took a few paces around the room.
"I think I'd rather marry you than someone I've never met. But I suppose you're right that it's strange. There must be some purpose behind it. Some advantage for House Hightower. But I don't know what. Neither of us stands to gain our ancestral lands."

"Probably it amuses him, since our natures are so different," Finn replied. "And he figures your nature will be to blab my secrets to everyone you meet." He said, smilingly slightly to take the sting out of the rebuke.

Mariya reddened.
"You didn't tell me it was a secret! I thought it was about to be revealed to the whole castle. Truly, I spoke only because I thought it was the proper courtesy for the situation and I hoped to please Lord Hightower by offering my congratulationS."

"Everything I tell you is a secret," Finn said in exasperation, "What else is worth talking about?"

"Oh...I suppose that's true," she said with a laugh. "Small talk is dull, but I didn't realise you loved secrets quite as much as that. I'm sorry, then. I will be more careful. I'm...um...not used to people telling me important things. I'm not important enough for most people. Girls often aren't, you know."
She sighed.
"Why did Lord Hightower speak of Kings Landing? What does he want you to do there?"

"I talked to Lymon about perhaps serving the Small Council, in some way," Finn said, "Since my talents seem to lay in that direction."

"Oh. That makes sense," she said. "I think it would be good for you. But what if we were...married? I would be lost in Kings Landing."

"Ah... Yes." Finn said, "Lord Hightower displayed some disinterest in how that was resolved. I regret that such a choice was made for you but it may yet be a to your advantage. Perhaps Lord Hightower might consent to letting you play some role in Sapphire's guard. Of course that duty falls to the Kingsguard, but Hightower might not object to having a woman who can be trusted to safeguard her person and reputation. Being so devout, and Sapphire's same gender." Finn proposed. "Failing that you can always be my bodyguard."

It was perhaps not the best reaction to a comment made by a future husband, but Mariya burst out laughing.
"That's funny, but maybe you've got a point," she said. "Nobody would expect a man's wife to protect him. As to Sapphire, even if her father gives his consent to my protecting her, I don't think she would like it very much. She and I have little to say to one another."
