"Oh. It's good you didn't die."
But she was confused as to what that had to do with his home.
"Are you alright now then?"

"OH, I see. That's sad but it's good you have pictures and memories. But why did you get sent here? It seems cruel to send you when you'd been so ill. Hard for your parents, especially."

She felt a pang of hurt on his behalf.
"How horrid. That's not so different from my own situation, I suppose, except my father was dead and my aunt didn't want her son to be a hostage, so she brought me instead. So, you see, our situations are sort of the same."
She smiled but since he wasn't looking at her, it didn't much matter.

Gregor was nearby searching for a book. He wanted to rescue William from reliving his less than fortunate childhood though he couldn't think of a proper distraction.
Maybe Gregor should just tell William that he wanted to inspect his spectacles and further the lad's torture by pointing out another result of his childhood illness. With an open book in hand Gregor glared at Mariya hoping she would get the hint and change the subject to something more pleasant. Perhaps she meant well, it was plain to see that William was uncomfortable.

"It's nice to hear somebody say that," she murmured. "Most people think my father a traitor. My grandsire too, before he bent the knee. I was just a babe in arms when it all happened, but their actions have determined my whole life."

"So, did you find anything worth reading, then?"
