Finn nodded, "I think we were put there to isolate us," he said. "If the Hightowers show us a lot of favor, it will make us unpopular with the others, and thus leave us with no friends but the Hightower. Assuming that was the motive, it's quite clever really." Finn said, wheels turning.

Mariya gasped. Her grip tightened on her training sword.
"Seven help us, I never thought of that! That is...unkind. But some of the others are from houses higher in rank and honour than ours. They'll surely have to go home eventually. But I suppose that might not be possible for us. Maybe they want to use us for...something."
But she had no experience in this sort of thing and couldn't imagine what the Hightowers would want with her, even if they meant to make use of Finn's abilities.
"If they truly favoured me, wouldn't Ser Derek have let me enter the contest? I begged him to let me in but he said no. And I bet letting me in the contest would make half the boys hate me."

"They don't need to truly favor us, just convince others that they do. And Derek is an old crusty soldier, I doubt even Lord Garnet could change his mind about something like that. I wouldn't read much into that." Finn said with a shrug.

"Oh, well, I tried. I suppose you're not competing, anyway?"

Finn laughed, "And get brained by some squire, I think not."

"I didn't think so. That's alright, then. I won't feel guilty for not going."

Finn laughed and launched an attack with his dagger and cloak.

Mariya fended him off easily now she knew what to expect but kept on the defensive.
"So what will you do if your opponent gets free of the cloak? Wouldn't it help to have a blade with a longer reach?"

Finn responded by throwing the cloak at her, which she successfully ducked, but as she did so he dove in and tackled her ,sending them both spilling to the ground with him on top. Using his left knee on her arm he pinned back her sword, and held the dagger over her, grinning wickedly.
"I will close the distance," he replied, "Were my weapon has the advantage."

She looked up at him, startled by his speed.
"That was well done," she said. "But what if your opponent is a big strong man who you can't knock over?"

"Whose to say I can't knock over a strong man?" Finn replied, "It just requires different tactics. Like cutting their hamstring first." He continued to straddle her triumphantly. "Are you willing to admit, that while different, my style has its value as well?" he asked.

She sighed.
"Yes, I do see that. But I think it's the kind where it would be better not to get into a fight at all. Um...could you let me up now? This isn't exactly comfortable, you know. And people might get the wrong idea."
She seemed vaguely embarrassed.

Finn laughed and got up, extending a hand for her to do the same.

She got to her feet and brushed herself down.
"Want to go again, or try something different?"

"Different like what?" Finn asked.
