What are the up to? This is surely not just a wedding.

One of my people overheard Lady Melinda in an argument with Lady Stark. And Lady Melinda blamed Anya Stark for this marriage to the ironborn, which she most definitely doesn't want.
And Benjen Stark is very weird. Possessed by the Witch Anya? That may be how the Flints end up seeing it.
I think Anya is definitely the key to the mystery. She caught my guy snooping so I would be hesitant to risk pissing her off more by additional snooping at least right away.

Interesting stuff... I was going to have Jon have a bit of a nose about at Winterfell when all attention was focused on the wedding feast (or slightly after, everyone being drunkenly asleep). Thought might be that that'll be a little dangerous so soon.
Turns out scenarios still exists so I will see if there is some way I might be able to get us some information that way.

I said for flavor, not gaining things like castles or plus eighteen vorpal swords.

Not even if we're facing that jabberwocky the Ironborn have no doubt brought with them? Damn!

Yeah, I'm confused by this too. I can certainly see the risks of tying to Ironborn, particularly without taking wards/hostages/double marriage type stuff. Having trouble figuring what the Starks think they'll gave from it.

My instinct is that there is some other force at work. Some non-regional allegiance, but obviously IC I have no idea, and even OOC I'd be simply making up random guesses.

Maybe something to do with an effort to throw the North in to chaos tied in with the approaching Wildlings?

By "an effort" you mean an admin effort, I take it?

Well, no. not directly. More like a conspiracy of NPCs operating behind the scenes. Like Cult of the Dead God type stuff. I don't even know if they exist in the new timeline, but some group working behind the scenes to accomplish an objective our characters wouldn't necessarily understand yet.
Since we can't come up with a scenario where the marriage alliance makes sense for the North from a strategic objective in the face of all this opposition, and the fact that the Ironborn are utterly unreliable partners, my take away from that is that the opposition and disorder are the features, not bugs, and we just don't understand the actual goal yet.

Gotcha. Though begs question how they influenced Lord Stark thus... Though I know you have suggested ways that might've been done. Maybe best to ask the question another way, what are the Ironborn getting out of it?

I don't know. I don't think the Ironborn are typically influenced by conspiracies and the like.
My working theory is that Lady Anya is an agent of.... THEM (For lack of a better name.) THEM desires to throw the North into chaos, for some as yet unknown reason, possibly related to Wildlings. Lady Anya, using... special women' powers, or sorcery or something, has co-opted Benjen's thinking, to get him to invite the ironborn into the North.
Why though? Greyjoy really only profits from the marriage either as an alliance for some war in the South, or if he means to make war against the North, in which case he has put his blood in the line of succession? but if that's the plan, it requires getting rid of Benjen, AND Anya. And why would Lady Anya make a deal that calls for her being offed?
I donno. that's where my thinking breaks down.
