Yeah AND all of Benjen's kids. Melinda's offspring will have a tenuous claim even if the Northern lords die as much as usual (they do seem to have a penchant, whether in LOW or the books). And besides, the Northern lords would have to accept a claim, and I can't imagine they'd submit to one such as Lord Balon.

Benjen only has two kids though, a boy and girl. Easily disposed of by an Ironborn. Then there is only Anya and Melinda. Of course it ought to be obvious that the Northmen would never answer to an Ironborn at Winterfell, but again, that may be a feature, and not a bug.
I guess what I'm saying is, if we can't find a motive for actions which cause confusion and disorder, then it is possible that the motive IS confusion and disorder. Just a matter of "For what purpose?" and we don't have enough information to make that decision yet.

No I'm buying that that could be what is affecting Lord Stark. Don't think it works for the Ironmen though. Total disorder would leave them little to plunder from the coasts.

Why does it leave them little to plunder? I'd think the plundering would be pretty good while we ran around with our heads cut off. Especially since if the only legal Stark of authority is married to an Iron Born, we'd have a tough time organizing our response.

Yeah for a while. But with disorder comes economic disaster. Soon there'd be nothing moving over there-- Don't think there's probably much moving now? The western coast of the North seems pretty bleak as is, which is why I don't think we read much in the books about interaction between North and Iron other than Ned's involvement in putting down the rebellion.
By which I mean to say, Pirates want a sort of uneasy balance of lack of legal entanglement with a bounty of trade, if they're going to really strike it big and last for a while.

Well I'd think that they'd actually be pursuing a goal of conquest rather than simply plunder, Book style. Actually Annex the western side of the North. Our independent policy means we can't count on much help for the south. If the Ironborn are successful it boosts their strength for a declaration of King of Salt, Rock and the North. With claim through Melinda's children, a few successes might induce the less noble Northmen to accept it.

It could be that, I suppose. Though, the Ironborn would be foolish to think they could conquer the North. They would not seem to have the men. One must always think of Baldwin and Bettley though, I suppose.

I encountered an info-merchant named Jacob in Wintertown. He was obviously there to gather information about the Ironborn-Stark wedding, so we can presume that Baldwin is well up to speed on everything that's going on.

Lol, of course he is. I meant more to the effect of, could the Ironmen be taking strength, most importantly infantry and heavy horse, from someone?

Possibly, but I doubt it. They may have reason to believe that we will be distracted by this Wildling threat, and so fighting on two fronts.
It's possible the ironborn may be receiving assurances of support from someone else but I doubt they intend to follow through.

Well, the support could be the wildlings themselves? Partition the North and give the eastern half to the King Beyond the Wall (presuming there is one).

With THEM (possibly represented by Anya) representing the middle man between Grejoy and the Wildlings?
would make a certain amount of sense.

THEM = Totally Hedonistic Epicurean Monsters! Where Anya's party people at!?
What?
Anyway, that seems to make the most sense. In which case we need to be ready to protect Lord Stark (and by extension The North) from himself (and by extension Anya).

So, I'm snooping around a little bit whilst the feast is going on. Problem is, the only way to get into the keep proper is by scaling up a damned wall and I'm not sure it'll be worth it because a) what the hell do I do if I get caught/fall off? and b) I doubt I'll find out anything useful.

Sounds like one of those times when discretion is the better part of valor, and/or when Bran gets thrown out a window.
