"If you think that, you do not know me nearly as well as you should," Steffon said, a note of sadness creeping into his voice. "I would not have shamed my bannerman such. Oscar Wylde was an honorable, loyal man, which is why I wanted to bind him to our House in the first place. After his death I had the servants scourged who spread those rumors of him. If I'd known Joanna were imparting a secret to me, I would have sent them away, but I did not know until she said it and you know as well as I how commoners love nothing more than to gossip about their betters."

"I should never have trusted her in the first place with it. But I had promised Lord Oscar that I wouldnt tell you. I was upset that you were determined to marry me to him, though I had said that I didnt want it, and neither did he. Tybolt asked me to marry him at the party and I love him truly. But I couldnt see you being happy with me and Tybolt when I had refused to marry Oscar. And his mother disliked him too."

Steffon shook his head. "Saying that you do not wish to marry the man I'd chosen, and saying that the man I'd chosen is incapable of being a proper husband to you are different things, Mari. I would have given you and Tybolt my blessing, had you not absconded in the night like common criminals."
He drank deeply from his whiskey glass, finishing it again, and staring at the empty crystal for a few moments before pushing it across the bar and standing up. "'Would haves' and 'what ifs' are a fool's quest, Father always used to say. Would you be amenable to leaving two days hence?"

"How could I have said that he was incapeable of being a proper husband when he was looking and if I had said that he wouldnt have been able to find a woman that could marry him and could live with him."
Marianne nodded. "Two days is fine for me. I will tell Joanna."

"My men will be ready, we will come up to the Rock to meet you, and then we can begin east on the Goldroad. Sound good?" he asked. He looked wistfully at the empty glass on the bar, and then shook his head slightly, and looked back at his sister.

Mari nodded.
"Dont drink anymore tonight Steffon, it really is no good for you."

"Very well, sweet sister, for you, I will not," Steffon said with a laugh, his grim mood seeming to evaporate instantaneously.

Mari grinned and kissed his cheek.
"Good. I did miss you when I was away Steffon."
