Milo shrugged, "I do not know... maybe my foot on your desk, or maybe one time I stared at your wife's bosom too long. But to be honest, I do not care why you dislike me. But we are going to have to work together, and if can not get over it it will hurt our work."

"Perhaps you should learn to not manipulate events so that you can get access to my keep against my will then."

"Perhaps your keep should not be barred to a servant of the King."

"Clearly there is little chance here of mutual respect, but I would not worry about our work suffering. I am able to keep personal feelings separate from my duties."

Milo snapped his feet to the ground, and leaned close to Maekar, "Yet you lie to my face. Do you think I am so foolish? I have been doing this job since before you were alive. The arrogance of the dragons is astounding."

Maekar raised his eyebrows, the slightest note of confusion in his eyes. "What lies do you believe I've told you?"

Milo twisted in his seat, "Who hired the Three Hill gang, I know you questioned these men. And the only name they gave you was Hardfall... because another of that late gang fell into my hands, and he said he had some notion who had hired Victor, and that it was common knowledge in the gang."

"I questioned four members of that gang thoroughly, as well as Victor's girl. None of them were able to identify who was behind the attacks. I find it incredibly unlikely that all of these people knew and were keeping it secret."

Milo snorted, "So do I. They did not know her name. Just a description... a rumored description I will admit."

"They did not offer any descriptions, Lord Bettley," annoyed that he had to keep repeating himself. "If it was common knowledge as you say perhaps it became so after the attack on Ser Euric's Manse, once Hardfall had fled and his men who knew no longer felt bound to stay quiet. Or perhaps the person who hired the Three Hills has spread around a false description of who hired them in order to cover his tracks."
"In any case, I have told you all I know on the case. If you will not stop naming me a liar then we will not be able to work together on this."

Milo nodded, "Fine perhaps I was mistaken. It would not be the first time."

Maekar nodded. "Now, I do not believe you will be willing to share this description with me?"

Milo pulled a piece of parchment from a pocket, and slid it across the desk toward Maekar.

Maekar picked up the parchment and read it.

"It is good to have a general description going further with this, but I do not believe there is enough to investigate into any longer with Hardfall dead. This could be any number of women," he said, putting the parchment over the candle and letting it burn.
