The bard smiles.
"As you wish. I was trained to call someone by their title."
He sets the bundle he has been carrying around on the ground, and withdraws his lute once more. He strikes a few soft chords, then begins to sing
"Marti was a fighting man
whose story should be told.
He was a son of circumstance
he couldn't quite control.
His father gave him wooden swords
and fought him every day.
Had him marching up and down
like he was on parade."
The song goes on goes on to explain how Marti was sent into the king's army, where he was called a coward because he was a pacifist, how he fought for his country, only to die in a duel against an enemy commander, and was given a pauper's funeral, despite what he had done for his land.
Jherek finishes with a final chorus
"All I ever wanted to be
was left alone to live in peace
but nobody would ever listen to me.
They forced a blade into my hands
and told me what to do with it
but nobody would ever listen to me..."
He trails off, and his fingers stop moving up and down the neck of the lute, his eyes remaining closed this time.

The bard smiled, less cheesily than before.
"I do enjoy it very much. That song is one of my own, and it is a gift to you. Never will that song leave my lips, save for when you request it."
He nods and replaces his lute back in his bundle.

The joy in his voice and the goofy grin on his face told Aalina that she would not have to force him.

The bard laughs
"How about you show me where I will be staying for the night, and where to go for morning meals, then I tell you stories and juggle dangerous objects for you until the sun rises? I am sure that Princess Targaryean has more important things to do than take care of a bard that shows up on her doorstep and proceeds to bother her cooking staff and her daughters' caretaker."

Aalina raised an eyebrow. "Her daughters' caretaker?" She laughed. "Havent heard that one before."
She led him to a small room somewhere in Runestone. It contained a bed a wooden chest and that was about it.
""Your chambers Ser." She said with a laugh.

Jherek peers into the room, and looks around.
"This will do quite nicely. Once more, I apologize for calling you Princess Targaryean's daughters' caretaker. I was trying to think of something that would anger you less than 'Septa'."
He sets his bundle down in the room, removing from it a long, slender case and his lute before following Aalina down the hallway.

"Am I that fearsome that you have to keep apologising?" Aalina said with a grin. "I promise I dont take after most of my family, Im the good one."
She led him back outside and to the Godswood, where she sat down, her back against one of the trees.
"What brought you to Runestone?"

Jherek falls in step alongside her.
"Not necessarily fearsome, but the man that taught me everything I know - 'Helm', he called himself - told me to always apologize if you think you did something wrong, even if you did not."
His eyes widen
"Sorry if you were trying to go for the fearsome thing."
he said jokingly. A smile crosses his face as he ponders the second question.
"As far as my reasons for coming here, I am simply looking for purpose, and my trail led me here."

"I DON'T KNOW!" Jon snapped, "if I knew, I would say, but I don't know." He reached for the wine glass, and their hands touched briefly, but he shrank away after wrapping his hand around the stem. Joanna said nothing for a minute or two but then the silence grated on her nerves so much she had to speak. "Please, Jon, I love you. I don't want us to quarrel.." She leaned forward and kissed him. |
