"Joanna, he is new here, and he gives me company other then the girls and yourself. I admire him yes, but not as anything more then a friend."

She felt relief but still some concern. Aalina's views were clearly not the bar's.
"It would seem that Master Doryn does not share your opinion," she said. "I think he does not understand that you are sworn to celibacy and chastity."

Aalina frowned. "I try not to think of those vows that I made. Anyway, what makes you think that?"

Joanna shrugged.
|"The way he looks at you, seeks you out at every opportunity. I'm used to men paying attention to me, but it's you that Master Doryn likes, not me. Have you not noticed?"

"Joanna, you know as well as I that I have never been the one that men chase. Why would he be any different. We talk that is all, and he made me remember my love of the harp."

Joanna sighed and drank some wine.
"Aalina, you are innocent in the ways of men. I have reason to believe that Doryn cares for you more than he should. I'm worried he might take advantage of you without realising that he is in the wrong. Bards are not like the rest of us, they think everything is a song. I don't want you to get hurt."

Aalina chuckled dryly.
"Joanna, I might not know much about men, but I do know never to trust a man that claims that he loves you." She said, refering to her Father. "No matter how much you are supposed to. You know as well as me that all I have is your children now."

"You have me," Joanna asnwered. "And I am pleased you are being sensible about this. Make sure Doryn knows you are unattainable, won't you?"

"How could I not be sensible Joanna?" Aalina asked looking very much like her mother as she stared at her friend. "I made my vows. I dont mean to break them."

"I never thought you did, but love makes fools of many people and I love you too well to watch you be hurt. It seems to me that a woman in your position is especially vulnerable to sweet words, because you have no experience of such things. But I can see that you don't need my protection."

"A woman in my position?" Aalina asked, her eyebrow raised. "I know what was chosen for me Joanna, I may hate it, I may hate what I have to do, what I have to give up but I am not my parents. I actually do as I have said. I may rebel but I am not some stupid girl anymore. I know that my life cannot change its course."

Joanna frowned.
"Maybe you could have changed your path, before you took your vows, but you didn't. Why not?"

"I was a child." She said shortly. "Is there anything else that you wanted Princess?"

"No. Just remember that I am here for you and if ever you want a way out of your duties, I will do what I can to help you. I shouldn't, but I will."
Her worsd had the ring of truth to them.
"You're like another sister to me," she said softly. "I hate to think of you unhappy."

"Thank you Princess, you and the girls are the only family that I have now. I couldnt break my vows and leave."
