"Very well. replied Aegon. "I would ask at the very least for a letter of recommendation though, as you have done for other lords such as Lord Tully over there.
"I am pleased for my nephew as well....the Martell girl should make him very happy." he said approvingly
"Now Rhaenys, while it is good to see you and talk of happy occasions such as marriages, tell me of matters around the realm. How did your meeting with your recalcitrant lords at the Vale go?"

"A mixed bag," she said. "The women were more amenable than the men. Royce, well, I think he accepts me because of the children, though he doesn't like it. Frey is, well, a Frey...And Lannister, he sees slights in every shadow and I feel the same about him so we parted on bad terms."

Aegon twirled the goblet of wine between his long fingers and thought for a moment.
"Lannister is the key I think, given his influence over the Stark girl and Frey. Win him over and your realm is safe. What were Lannister's particular grievances?"

"You're right," Rhaenys agreed. "Lannister is the main threat. His complaints were that I favour exiles and kinfolk over great lords such as himself and his friends. He completely fails to see that it is natural for me to do so when he and his kind have been nothing but trouble to me. They thought I was a threat to them when I had the fleet change its anchorage yet they are the ones who threaten me by moving their troops about the kingdom any time I do anything they mislike. He specificailly desired me to remove Lord Euric from his position as Hand and appoint either himself, Lord Frey or Lord Royce."

Aegon continued to twirl the goblet between his fingers.
"I understand why you made Lord Dayne your Hand, but it was bound to excite jealousy amongst the great lords. Lord Dayne is a landless knight and granted, he is a very good knight, but he is young and socially inferior to them by title and blood. That would stick in their craw."

Lord Aurane meanwhile is talking to Ariadne Martell at the other end of the table.
"So my lady...I hope you have enjoyed Driftmark so far. One day is not enough to see the beauty of my lands. I am eager to show you the rest of my island upon the morrow."

"It is lovely. I'm looking forward to that." she smiled.

He smiled back and reached over to re-fill her goblet.
"They want us to marry you know" he said indicating the Queen and Aegon. "I was a little disinclined at first to agree...you know... not knowing the girl and all that.... but having now met you, your beauty takes my breath away."

"Oh thank you. I hope we'll get to know each other better. A man like you.. how is it you're still unwed?" Ariadne sipped the wine.

"For the past few years, fighting the Others in the service of the Queen has taken most of my time. Plus if I fell, I didn't want to leave a young widow. I also swore I would not seek marriage until Driftmark was restored to me."
Aurane paused and smiled.
"And I'm only 24. Up until now, marriage hasn't been at the forefront of my thoughts. That is rapidly changing though."

She leaned a bit closer to him, smiling. "I'm glad it is."

"Well my Princess..." the young Lord replied. "Perhaps we should drink to our impending union,....." He held out his goblet towards her.
"....both of body and of mind."

Ariadne smiled, clinked her glass against his and drank from it.
