Brandon nodded, "He is definatly not a simpleton. Fortunatly I know some Braavosi merchants through a friend, which thankfully means that Gulltown still get its fair share of some of the trade".

"Well see how long that lasts." Justin scoffed. "Whatever the Sealord plans for us, I doubt he'll leave you be either, Braavosi merchants or no."

Brandon shrugged, "It's not a permanent solution, and it's not as if the Vale can't feed itself". Brandon paused, "How empty is the King's treasury? Is the King going to sell his sword to Braavos more times in the future?"

Brandon looked at his sons playing, then back at Lord Hightower, "I was wondering if you wouldn't mind having my son as a page and eventually a squire? I believe it would be a good experience for him". Hearing his father's words Balor perked up eyes widening, unfortunatly it allowed his little brother to tackle him to the ground.

Justin smiled, "I should much like to continue the close relations between our two regions. It will not be far off if I were to tell you that there were few enough of their fellow Westerosi my people can abide, but a Valeman in Oldtown ever finds himself among friends. I will accept."

Brandon smiled, and Balor nearly bounced with joy his brother scowled a bit though. Brandon gave his youngest boy a sharp look and Patrek's scowl went away. "Excellent, though I'm sure my wife will scold me for sending her oldest child away," Brandon chuckled.
Patrek ran to do some other things, and Balor looked torn between follwing and staying. Eventually he decided to stay and introduced himself, "I'm Balor Waxley, Lord Hightower". He bowed. "Did you know that our house words is nearly the same, not the words I mean, but the.. meaning. Do you think I could visit the Citadel? What other things are there to do in Oldtown, I'd like to do those aswell? Could I.." Balor asked with too much energy but stopped when he looked at his father's expression.

Justin raised his hands. "One thing at a time Master Waxley. Tell me, what are your house words?"

"Light in Darkness," he said proudly, standing straight.

"Well those certainly are very similar. When we visit the citadel perhaps the Maesters there can tell you how our words were chosen so many many years ago. I should warn you, master Balor, being a page is not a task which lacks work."

Balor nodded fervently, "knowledge and experience doesn't come cheap, my father always say. I am prepared to work hard".

"Very well Master Balor, please gather your things and be prepared to leave, I will speak with your father a while longer."
He waited for the boy to leave and than turned back.
"He seems very bright. May I ask how stands the Vale's dispositions towards the rest of the Kingdom? It has been a very... strange fifteen years."

Balor left to get his things in a dignified way untill he was out of sight, then he started running.
"The Vale has no love for Dorne, or the Ironborn though to a lesser degree I. Even though Lady Aranya Royce's children will one day be the Paramount of the West, there's not much love between the regions not hate either. The North and the Stormlands... are on slightly better terms I'd say. The Riverlands... well some parts have rebelled as many times as Dorne. I'd say that Far Reach is the only kingdom that the Vale would trust nearly unconditionally, among the Crownlands it would be Duskendale that the Vale would trust," Brandon said after some thinking.

"Of course, Duskendale is blood, I should expect nothing less. I would imagine that my lords of the Far Reach would consider your assessment of Lord Cedric's intentions... a bit rosy for our taste, but the others seem accurate enough." Justin commented.
"I had just one more thought. I heard the other day from Ser Mychel, of the Kingsguard, he was convinced that Roland lives still, in the depths of the Red Keeps cells. Had you heard? I had been told he had passed on."

"The speculation of Lord Irwyn's untimely death hasn't been discussed in great detail in the Vale, though some is suspicious much in the same way they are suspicious of Lord Reed".
Brandon looks up at the mention of Roland, a hopefull look on his face, "I have been told the same. Is he truly alive?". Brandon's voice seemed pitched.

"So I've heard." Justin said sadly. "I had understood it to be a sharp stabbing pain, but instead his incarceration is a dull and lingering gangrene. Those can be harder to bear."
