Roland nodded curtly. "He does not heal."

"Hello Cyrus," Alexander says smiling to his young Banner Lord before turning back to Roland.
"I wanted to tell you before the rumors circulated that the King has asked me to be his hand and despite my best judgement I accepted." Alexander struggles with his word.
"The King told me why you resigned and I would have advised exactly the same," Alexander blurts out awkwardly.

"Hello," Cyrus squeaked nervously.

Roland stared directly at Lord Irwyn, "And yet you took the job anyway, when you had more cause for offense than I. Now your loyal man is dead, killed by some mob."

Alexander nods, "I did, but only because I trusted no man besides you to provide sane council. I wanted nothing more than to return home to Uplands but there would be another war within years and I would just be out in some damned foreign land. Even still it looks like the realm will plummet into madness."

Roland shook his head slowly. "This boy king does not need council. He will not heed it."

Alexander nods, "Yes but that does not mean there should not be a strong voice on council to speak the truth. We are both commanders Roland we have had our share of poorly executed orders but we still do our best to make them work."

"But," Roland asked, "How can you stand the dishonor? Every moment that some Martell walks in Dorne a lord... Every crow that picks at Lord Hillcrest and his families's corpses." Roland shook his head. "The boy king has pissed on you. On all that you did, in the singularly worst possible way."
Roland looked again to Lord Irwyn. "A man who can stomach that sort of insult. He must be insane, or must reek of ambition."

Alexander shakes his head, "Duty is a strange thing Roland as you well know. It is both humbling and costly. . . and we have had are share of being pissed on, yet we still rise and do battle the next day." Alexander shudders, "Are you a religious man Roland?" Alexander asks before continuing. "I know this will sound ludicrous in the face of all the tragedy that has befallen each of us but sometimes I feel that every action is predestined. Our faith in Westeros has fallen severely with cults and foreign faiths getting as much attention as the Seven. I sometimes think that our suffering is the Smith's way of reminding us that we do not hold our own destinies in our hands."

"I am religious insofar as I think the Warrior watches over me as I kill, and pray that the Smith will keep me together." Roland's lips screwed up strangely as he thought before he spoke again. "I believe a man makes his destiny in most things."

Alexander nodded, "That may be so" Alexander says before speaking again, "Although it comforts me to think that my lady wife and my friends Francis and Ser Gilbert did not die for the personal desires of a wicked few but in the greater fabric of a masterfully crafted plan. . .Perhaps the Mother softened the King's Heart about Horas Martell in order to teach the realm a greater lesson in destiny? For the boy to react as foolishly as he did against almost unanimous council indicates more then just childishness."

"I was there. It was no vision. It was arbitrary. Nothing more. Your friends' sacrifices in Dorne are being traded for a boy's whim."

"Well only time will tell. . . only time will tell," Alexander says not entirely willing to give up hope that it was all for naught, "while you do not respect my decision Roland, I hope this will not change our friendship, in my most darkest days I always knew that we could count on the Vale to stand with us no matter how proud or strong the enemy."

Roland grunted. "I know my duty. But I know my duty to honor and family, in addition to my liege. If there's nothing else, I must see to preparations for the return to the Vale."

"There is something else, that I wanted to discuss with you earlier but now I fear it may be in poor taste." Alexander looks at Cyrus Varner.
"Cyrus can you excuse us for a second." Alexander says meekly.
