Queen Rhaenys rode out at the head of a force commanded by Ser Jess Dunn. Maekar Blackfyre was with her, and Ser Aerys Velaryon. They were looking for Lord Karstark's force and that of Aegon Targaryen, which had been delayed by Karstark.

"Long" Jess sat slumped in his saddle and occasionally pulled a flask from his boot and drank from it.

Rhaenys turned to Jess.
"Would you share your flask with your queen? I have a thirst. Have you any notion how long it will take us to find Karstark and Aegon?"

Jess' eyes opened wide, and then he calmly handed over his flask, "Beware there is something quite strong in their... my grace." He studied her, and scratched at his ear, "Not sure. The orders were dispatched immediately placing Locke in charge of that force instead of Karstark, but I ain't go no semblance of an idea what that crazy north fuck has got planned." He thought a moment and scratched his chin in thought.

Rhaenys took a cautious sip and was glad she'd done so as her throat burned.
"It was both wrong and foolish of him to act as he did Aegon is...unpredictable but it is for me to say whether or not he should be detained and there was no cause for it in this case. It must have been obvious that Aegon meant to join me. It makes no sense to deny him. Karkstark will have to be taught a lesson, not counting having his command taken from him."

Jess nodded, "Aye. Some of the stuff Selwyn was cursing made me blush, and I am a rough, rough man." He chuckled, and then looked at the Queen and added hastily, "Your Grace."

"Don't worry about it. Selwyn in a rough man too," Rhaenys answered. "I'm getting used to it."
She was thinking not of cursing though but of her times abed with Selwyn. He was a good lover but lacking in finesse.
"WHat would you do with Karkstak, if you were in my place?"

"I guess it depends on his actions. If he was fooled into moving I would just reduce him in rank for his incompetence. If he knew he was moving with out your permission, maybe a flogging. Or the like."

Her gaze was filled with incredulity.
"You would flog a lord? It was my impression that such punishments were usually reserved for the common soldier."

Jess nodded, "I think it is. But Selwyn has had at least two lords flogged. He does not like his men stepping out of line. He is of the opinion that the High should know better then the low. And if they should know better their punishment should be graver as well."

"Interesting," said Rhaenys. "The notion makes me a little uncomfortable, I will admit, but I can see the sense in it. It can't be pleasant for those who suffer a flogging to go to their marriage bed knowing their wife will see the scars they bear. What lords did Selwyn inflict those punishments on, do you know?"

Ser Aerys Velaryon rode with the force. The old knight now in his sixties was still fit and trim, but he now looked weary. However he pressed on, as he knew Aegon was relying on him to sort out what was happening.
Aery Velaryon had been a rebel, an exile and an adventurer in his long life. In his long association with the exiled Targaryens he had had much experience with treachery and double-dealing. As a result he could smell it a mile off. There was treachery afoot here.
As a result he stayed as close as he could to the Queen's person, continually watchful of the persons around him.

Jess smiled, "A Lord Grafton, and Lord Brune. Both are dead now. Grafton got four friendly arrows through his back. We think by accident. And Brune was killed by wights three days south of where he was suppose to be. We think Brune broke and ran." He shrugged, "Many a man broke. It was a tough war." He pulled back on his flask.

"i see.. Both of them were Valemen, were they not?" Rhaenys asked Dunn. "That is...strange."

"Bad Luck I guess." Jess replied, "It is strange though, becuase of how close Selwyn's ties are to the vale. His cousin, and kin the Royces rule there."
