Rhaenys arrives to speak with her betrothed. Her step is full of purpose, as is her face. She looks a different woman from the one Selwyn has become accustomed to.
"Selwyn," she said. "I need to speak to you most urgently."

Selwyn nodded at Dunn and turned to face her, "I am always available."

"Are you?" She shook her head. "I am not so sure. I said nothing at Winterfell since it would have made us both look foolish but it did not please me that you had Ser Euric appointe to the Small Council and speak with Lord Marbrand without my consent. I welcome Ser Euric to the Small Council, but it is my repsonsibility to make those appointments and you took it out of my hands. I value your counsel, Selwyn, but I wish you would recall that we must work together now."

Selwyn scratched at his ruined cheek waiting for her to finish, "I did not take it out of your Hand. Those are my duties, and when I asked Ser Euric to do me that favor I told him he it was only a temporary position."

"Yes, but you did not consult with me first, as you should have done with something so important," Rhaenys pointed out. "The position has been confirmed now, so I will let that rest, but I would have you remember that you are the Hand now, not the king."

"In my experience Hands do not run to the King to ask permission for every command they give. They act, and then explain their actions to the King later." Selwyn sighed, "If you were not so afraid of protecting every imagined iota of a Queen's power you would be ruling a far deal better."

She wasn't finished with the matter of Selwyn acting without her consent but she put that aside for a moment to deal with the implied insult he'd just dealt her
"And just what do you mean by that?"

"You are so concerned with appearing to rule you do not spend anytime actually ruling." Selwyn shook his head and rubbed his eyes, "Let me tell you something you would not..." He turned and waved his men out of the tent. They gladly fled into the night.
He began again, "Let me tell you something that your books and stories would not teach you. IN Westeros the King and Queen has only a scrap of more power then his Lord Paramounts. Have you studied our history at all? Every King of the last Hundred years died by sword, fire or murder. The men who follow us.... follow you will make you eat shit, and you will have to smile and pretend you love it. You can ask my father if you like, he had a rebellion that should have crushed him, just for commanding everything whim that appeared in his head." Selwyn has breathing hard when he finished, but it was the only sign he felt anything.

"I didn't know," Rhaenys said quietly, though there was still an edge to her voice. "My mother was born here but she left as a young girl, and she was no historian. My grasp of the history of the realm is sketchy at best and mostly focussed on events that happened hundreds of years past. I mean, I know all about the Blackfyre rebellion and the Young Dragon, and many other things, but I know little of more recent history. I would welcome the chance to read some of the historical accounts, when the chance arises. But...I want to rule for true, Selwyn, I really do. However, I am in a difficult position. Men don't like to follow women, and many of them see you as king still. I need you to help me win their respect so they will follow me of their own free will, not to give the orders for me."

"I do not think you understand what the position of Hand is then." Selwyn replied and crossed his arms, "If you like I will resign, and you can find a man fitting your needs better."

"No!"
She felt a sharp moment of panic. Her cause would be lost without Selwyn. She wlaked to him and stroked his scarred face.
"Don't do that, please. I need you to be my Hand. But...how am I ever to win the respect of my lords if everything is done before I even have the chance to make a decision for myself?"

"If I make a decision it is in your name. Own it." Selwyn replied, "I was near death and unconcious for weeks. But every command the Thatcher gave is my responsibility. That or my Fathers. I terminated him as soon as I was aware of his sins. But some of them are mine forever." He snorted, "That is why I understand his son so well."

"I see. Nevertheless, I must still give some of the commands myself, else I am no more than a figurehead, and I don't want to be that."
She frowned and sighed.
"It is harder for women, I know. I accept that, but I have good men to back me up, yourself included. Still, I must be a king in all but name, regardless of my sex. Tell me, is there anything you have planned that I should know about?"

"I have told you everything. We move south for Harrenhal." Selwyn's lip quirked, "I will stay two days north. Lord Greyjoy and Lord Tully are flanking Thatcher's host so if it comes to battle we are ready. Ser Talyn has gone to infiltrate his father's men."
