"Good. In future, I want you to tell me your plans rather than me having to ask. Oh yes, and Aegon is supposed to be coming to us with three hundred men recruited from the lands around Winterfell. I will leave you to decide their role in any battle sto come. What provision have you made for my brother Saenarys' men? And for myself and my sisters? I mean to do more than cower in a tent, Selwyn, as I have told you before. I must be there, even if I do not fight."

Selwyn looked up, "I will find a place for your men." He smiled, "Last time I checked your position was two days in front of us with a hundred men. I will not include in my plans until you are a part of my host."

"I see. Well then, that sounds fine. though we have to actually get past Moat Cailin first. In the meantime, have you anyone who can help me learn more about the history of Westeros?"

"I will do it." Selwyn replied, "Ask me any question you have and I will be glad to explain." He sat on his camp bed, and motioned her to join him.

She sat next to him, feeling awkward and ignorant and wishing she could get her hands on some history books.
"Where to start, though? There is so much I don't know, Selwyn."
Rhaenys looked at her hands, thinking. She had a feeling Selwyn didn't like her much, well, except in one obvious way, and yet she badly wanted him to.
"What about...could you tell me about the kings of the past hundred years who died by fire and sword and so on? Tell me what they did wrong and why they died, so I know not to make the same mistakes."

Selwyn nodded and smiled, "I shall start with my illustrious father Rodrick. He was King for more then thirty years. A legendary warrior and philanderer, but such a poor king he managed to cause the Stormlands, Reach, Vale, Riverlands and the North to all rebel against him."
Selwyn shook his head, "A war he surely should have lost if not for his skill as battle leader, and his luck that the other side was willing to decide the outcome by Trial by combat. He won narrowly. Went on to sire a horde of unclaimed bastards, and to be murdered in bed by his own Hand."
"The King before him was his own brother. Rickon was king for most of his formative years, losing the crown just after he reached his majority because his mother's lies were exposed. She had claimed Rickon the elder twin, when it was Rodrick the whole time. Rickon immediately stepped down, and vacated his throne. Rickon was killed defending my Father's claim during the Great Revolt." Selwyn shook his head.
"The King before that was King Callen. They call him The Exile because he spent years fleeing the Targaryens who had stolen his father's crown." Selwyn looked at Rhae, "Or rescued the Targaryen Crown from the Baratheons. It depends on your perspective I suppose. Callen was murdered when the Reach Rebelled during Fossoway's Folly."
"Callen's Father was murderded to give King Aegon a try at the Throne. Aegon passed giving it to Aedon. Aedon is killed by his brother Aemon. Then this Dondarrion relative declares himself king, and the two Kings kill each other." He frowned and shook his head.
Touching his face he looked at her, "There is a heavy price with the crown you now wear. You have my pity."

She'd been sitting quietly taking it all in but now she jumped up in anger.
"Pity? I don't want your pity, Selwyn, nor any man's!"

Selwyn nodded and his lip quirked again, "Of course not."

She relaxed, but was not sure he meant what he'd said.
"So there weren't any good kings in recent history?"

"Rickon's Regents were not terrible." Selwyn replied, "And his brief years were fair. But otherwise, no there were not." He shook his head, "Maybe us Baratheons are as cursed as you Targaryens."

A chill went down her spine and she did her best to pay it no mind.
"Well, perhaps we will be less unlucky now we are working together and our chidren will have the best of both Targaryen and Baratheon?"

Selwyn snorted, "Drunken bouts of violence and sex burning with madness and destruction." He barked out a single laugh, "What are we unleashing on the world?"

She gave him a look filled with sheer annoyance.
"We are doing what we must. Pray keep your doubts to yourself, Selwyn. It does no good. We must have faith, else we might just as well have let ourselves die fighting the Others."

Selwyn shook his head once, "I did not realize you had no sense of humor. I will contain myself from now on."

Rhaenys winced.
"Please, forget I spoke. I thought you had no sense of humour. Most all our conversations have been about the most grave matters. There hasn't been time for anything else and, really, you aren't really very talkative."
