"Not at all Rhaenys."
Aegon rose and waved her to his seat, while pointedly ignoring Maekar Blackfyre. He pulled up another seat for Jeyne Ladybright, while Valarr the squire fetched a third seat for Aegon and then exited the tent.
Aerys Velaryon stood at the entrance. He made to leave as well, but Aegon signalled him to stay.

Rhaenys sat but Jeyne declined a seat. She stood next to her queen. Maekar made a point of sitting in the chair that had been fetched for Jeyne.
"I wanted to apologise, first of all," Rhaenys said. "I acted in haste, out of necessity, but I realise now that I should have had a care for your position. I regret that I did not."

Aegon inclined his head in acceptance of Rhaenys apology.
"What necessity was there, that such haste needed to be made?"

Rhaenys gritted her teeth as she formed a reply. She ached to say something harsh but knew she had to restrain herself. Aegon was her cousin, after all.
"Trouble with the Ironborn, of course, and then a battle wit hthe wildlings. I though you knew that?"

Aegon raised a silver eyebrow.
"Both the trouble with the Ironborn and the battle with the wildlings could have been avoided. Tarly over-reached himself and he....", he indicated Maekar Blackfyre, ".....over exaggerated the direness of the situation."

"I did no such thing!" Maekar snarled. "Her Grace did not know the full truth when she gave the orders, couldn't have done. She made a swift decision because she had to."
Rhaenys regarded both her cousins in turn. Neither one of them could tell what she thought. She kept them waiting a long moment before she spoke.
"Aegon," she said softly. "I do not dispute your right to command the men I put under your command but I hope you do realise that Maekar and Borcas were also acting under my direct command. To challenge them is to challenge me."

Aegon ignored Maekar's outburst.
"How would I know that Rhaenys? I wasn't consulted, or appraised of the situation, despite being present here in the camp.
"In the end it was my actions that stopped this whole shambles from becoming a even bigger shambles. What if the wildings had pursued and massacred Tarly's forces? What if the other wildling camps had joined the battle against us? What if we'd lost significant numbers men to the wildlings in a larger battle? Luckily none of those things happened. Matters could have been so much worse."

"They could. Thank the gods they weren't," Rhaenys said. "I am thankful that you acted as you did, cousin, but that does not change the fact that you doubt the actions of my own sworn men."
Maekar spoke up.
"I had assumed your lieutenants would fetch you and apprise you of the situation even while Borcas and I were mobilising the men. But they didn't."

"Your sworn men acted wrongly Rhaenys."
He glared at Maekar.
"My lieutenants were meeting with me, Maekar. Perhaps you could have bothered to find that out. You know...the big tent flying the Targaryen banner in the centre of the camp? That's usually where you'll find us."

"There wasn't time," Maekar thought, barely stopping himself from adding something much more inflammatory.
Rhaenys glared at Aegon.
"You tell your queen that her men were acting wrongly when they were acting under her own ordres? That is perilous close to treason, Aegon."

Aegon sighed.
"Is plain-speaking in private now labelled 'treason'?
"Was Simon Tarly acting under your orders Rhaenys? Did he act rightly or wrongly? The fact your men carried out your orders wrongly, does not make those orders in themselves wrong."

Rhaenys glared at him, her hand raising of its own accord as she itched to slap him.
"Aegon, I am your queen! If you say my orders are wrong then yes, that is treasonous, no matter where we are. I'm tired of talking. What's done is done. Deal with it, else I will begin to wonder if I can trust you."

Aegon looked at her coldly.
"So why are you here Rhaenys? Have you come here purely to question my loyalty? Or is there some other matter?"

"I have told you why I came!" Rhaenys snapped. "I have explained the situation as I see it. I have said that some mistakes were made on my part and I have told you where you erred. That is all I wanted to do and it is done. I will not be questioned by you, Aegon, nor will I suffer demands from you. You would be wise to keep a still tongue in your head if you do not wish to incur my wrath."

Aegon's expression didn't change.
"Very well Rhaenys.
"I acted in the best interests of the Crown and loyalty to you.
"Now.. what of Tarly and Ariel?"
