He also said he won't listen to my command to return to Highgarden.

Well what gives you the right to command him? You're not his liegelord

Post by Ser Sylvan Dondarrion on Nov 7, 2008 22:52:06 GMT -5
I'm currently hammering out the fine details for the character of Sylvan Dondarrion, who is the current captain of the Gray Company (It's abit of a placeholder name for now).
Expert: Swordfighting (He Has to be the best swordsman in the company, otherwise he might get replaced, plus it's abit dashing) 2 Noteworthy: Ambush and Horseriding (He leads a mobile company given to fighting forces many times their size) 2 Apprentice: Strategy and Leadership (An accute knowledge of the battlefield and the ability to inspire men would be important for leading mercenaries). 2 Novice: Daggers and Longbows (Maybe Maces or some other close combat form; You're a mercenary, you're going to have to work with what you have and on your feet). 2 Beginner: Sailing and Diplomacy (He doesn't like boats, but will use them as necessary and he has a Tyroshi paymaster select and negotiate contracts, but he knows roughly "what he's getting into" and the workings of negotiation).
So, feel free to comment and criticize as necessary. Thanks.

Well if your Dondarrion I would clear that with Breck.
But all of your stats seem fine.

Hm... Looking good, except a few things.
Horseriding isn't the most useful skill, usually only used for races or when running away. Perhaps you may want to replace it with Scouting, another skill needed when facing formidable armies?
Other than that, perhaps you may want to replace Diplomacy with something a little more specific, like persuasion, haggling, interrogation, or something of that sort that can be used for everyday things. Diplomacy probably wont be used unless making deals with foreign companies/ princes.
Just some suggestions to make sure you have the optimal character

I'd also recommend not going over board with the weapon skills. Realistically, you'll almost always use your highest weapon skill when in battle anyway. If you really want the multiple weapon skills, definitely take sword, longbow, and dagger, in that order, since those are the most likely to be useful. There is no real reason you will have a mace but not have access to a sword. But its feasible that you have to hide a dagger on you, when you can't have a sword.

I decided to take some advice for once and put Evergreen back in storage... tell me what you think of Martyn. I was sort of aiming for the exact opposite of Evergreen.
1) Character Name: Lord Martyn Lefford
2) Character Age: 42
3) Character Nationality: The Westerlands
4) Character Byname:
5) Character Skills (Choose 2 beginner skills, 2 novice skills, 2 apprentice skills, and 2 noteworthy skills and 1 expert skill): Beginner Dagger, Beginner Unarmed Combat, Novice Intrigue, Novice Naval Battle, Apprentice Finances, Apprentice Bow, Noteworthy Sword, Noteworthy Stewardship, Expert Battle
6) Character's Second (Choose 2 beginner skills, 2 novice skills, 2 apprentice skills, and 2 noteworthy skills):
7) Character Personal History: Lord Martyn Lefford is someone who was probably never really a child. He was born, he grew into a man, and he became a lord. No youthful adventures and no romances, no battles and no knives behind the door. If he ever had a charming bone in his body, he had it removed a long time ago.
Lord Leffford guards and mines the Golden Tooth because that it is his what Leffords do. Martyn surely has thoughts that concern neither fighting and mining, but what they are, none may guess from his expressionless face. Oh, he smiles around acquaintances and laughs at jokes, but even these seem more like reflexes than sincere emotions.
8) Character Physical Description: Tall and almost horse-faced, his blank face is more notable than any actual features.
9) Character Reputation: Martyn Lefford is as boring as one can be while ruling the greatest mother lode of wealth in the continent…

You might note that his father was the famed Golden One, who died during the Battle of Deep Den against the Basilisks in 526, I played this character for like two days way back when he was a kid. Living up to his father's reputation might be a point of interest.

Hi folks! I'm skimming through the forums trying to catch up, but I think I could use some help in creating my character. I've noticed that I'm encouraged to pick a member of a great house, but that others have played minor characters, or even non-nobles? My first choice was to play as a wildling...it doesn't seem to me that there is any precedent for this, but that there is some presence on the Night's Watch which would allow for roleplaying (or rivalry at the very least ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) Thanks in advance!

There has been a precedence for it. A couple people have tried it, and it almost always fails. simply not enough roleplaying action to sustain interest. I suppose you can try if you like, but don't say we didn't warn you. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Okay. I'm not sure if I'm going to have time to keep up to date with all that's going on anyway, so this seems better suited for me than I previously thought.
What level of status, and I say this somewhat ironically, would I be allowed to start with as a wildling?
