Monterys looked quizzically at the other lords as Mallister exited and then smiled.
"I assume that's a yes.
"Anyway I have a Keep to take possession of. I'll be raising some men immediately to assist for when our Lord Commander sees fit to move against the rest of Barclay's forces. You're all welcome to join me in the Keep's Great Hall for the victory feast, after the garrison swears allegiance to its' new Lord."
He turned to Dudley, addressing him quite formally in front of the other lords.
"Lord Marbrand, would you consent to acting as my main witness to the garrison giving the oaths of allegiance?

"It would be my honour, Lord Velaryon," Dudley replied solemnly, maintaining the air of formality.

Later on in the day, prior to the taking of the keep, Dudley drags Monterys aside for a quiet word.
"Nothing too important Monty," he begins with a friendly smile, "just something I wanted to tell you, as my closest friend. I have accepted a commission from the master of laws - I am to serve as Westerosi Ambassador to Braavos. I leave for King's Landing at the earliest honourable opportunity." He smiled but looked searchingly for Lord Velaryon's opinion.

Monterys clapped Dudley on the back and smiled broadly.
"Well done Dudley. Of course you should accept. A great honor. If you have been summoned to return to Kings Landing then you should leave at once. Driftmark is now taken and I will be busy restoring my rule.
"I will of course be sorry to not have you around, but Driftmark is at least on the right side of Westeros to make visits not too prohibitive. Promise me you'll at least return, even if briefly, for my wedding."

Dudley smiled as he received his best friend's blessing.
His face fell into a look of confusion though at Velaryon's request. "Monty... you are to be married? Has our friendship fallen to such a state that we do not know these kind of things about each other? I had no idea..." he spluttered looking to his friend helplessly.

Monterys nodded.
"I have just received approval from Kings Landing for the match. I haven't said anything....because the lady herself doesn't even know it yet."

Dudley's look of astonishment wavered and turned into a confused grin. "You sly old dog you..." he said, still clearly working over what he was hearing in his head.
He gave up presently and shook his head. "Are you going to divulge more or should I leave it at that?"

Monterys grinned.
"Leave it at that Dudds. It would be churlish of me not to let the lady know first. Asd soon as she does, you along with my mother, my grandfather and Lyonel will be the first ones to know."

Dudley laughed merrily. "Ok Monty, though depending on the bride I reserve the right to be busy with ambassadorial duties on the day of your wedding." He winked.
