Loren is in the Solar of his late friend Justin Hightower, the large Solar that has been used as the office of the Lord Regent since the time of Francis Varner. He looks up as Samuel enters.

Lord Samuel Tarly arrives at the Burrow, Heartsong hanging from his back. He greets the guards by name, having spent most of his time here since arriving in King's Landing. He seeks out Loren, whom he hadn't seen since the last one King Rodrick's parties.
"Loren, we have to do something about this atrocity," he said bluntly. He knew that his friend knew to what he was referring. "As blasphemous as it is to hear about the murder of these men of the Gods, what's worse is knowing that there are men out there working in coordination to undermine the Seven and their faithful."

Loren nodded, "I agree, with you Sam though I am not sure what scares me more. . . the vicious evilness of the attacks or the fact such a planned and coordinated endeavor could go unnoticed by the Kingdom's plethora of spies."

Samuel frowned. "That's a good point, Loren, I hadn't thought of that..." his voice trailed off. "How could Thatcher's men not have even gotten a hint of this plan? Do you think he or the King could have sanctioned this atrocity?" he whispered, in horror.

"I was talking of my own spies," Loren said laughing hard, "Thatcher is new to his post and probably couldn't find his ass in the dark with the Crone to guide him, and the King as debased as he is would never sanction an action this nefarious," Loren stops smiling.
"However, the fact that Flea's network turned up nothing proves either these men are very well organized or my organization is slipping. My guess is its the latter as without the old man around to keep the boys in line they are starting to slip." Loren shook his head, he had always wondered where his childhood mentor went but with Flea it was usually better not to ask.

The Reaver is allowed entrance and shown up a winding maze of stairs and passage ways to a modest Solar.
Loren looks up from some parchments, "A Creyon Harlaw to see you mi lord," a guard says as Creyon enters the room.
"What can I do for you Captain Creyon?" Loren says putting down the papers and taking a guess on the man's title. Creyon is offered a seat across from the Reach lord as a servant enters and brings in some Arbor wine and some cheese, offering it to the Ironborn.

"Lord Irwyn," Creyon does a florid bow and takes his seat. He swirls the wine around his glass and takes in a whiff of it before finally taking a sip. "Wonderful! Full-bodied and not overly tannic. Nothing like the Mander shit we've been swilling down at the Shields. Our warehouses are overflowing with that dreadful stuff at the moment," Creyon pauses to take a careful look at Loren's face to study his reaction.
"A little self-introduction is in order I think. Among the Ironborn I am mostly known as Qhored and Balon's useless cousin, and Master of Harridan Hill. However, I have recently become heir to Greyshield with my uncle's rise to Lordship, and I come to you today representing the interests of the Shield Lords. If it please your Lordship, please share with me what you have heard about the rise in piracy along the Mander. We have been hearing dreadful rumors."

Loren says nothing his hands forged gently into a temple which he rested his chin on, "I will be blunt with you Captain, because I am a blunt man, and I respect your family a great deal," Loren motions for the servant to leave.
"I cannot say I condone the Ironborn keeping the Shields, even though I would say in years past the interest of the Far Reach has aligned more readily with that of your family then it did with the Tyrell where you would expect closer relations," Loren cleared his throat.
"I had heard the rumors of increased piracy but . . ." Loren paused for a moment, "excuse my preconceived notions. . . but I had assumed fully that the piracy was the work of your kin, are you trying to make me believe otherwise?"

"Who knows? There is a good chance that the some of our Captains are responsible, but on the other hand it's not like the Ironborn have a monopoly on piracy either. We are currently investigating the issue ourselves," Creyon took in another sip of his wine.
"I do not know if you were aware, but just months ago we were close to another war over the Shields after Oakheart tried to, in essence pay the crown to take them back for him. Given their penchant for getting other people to do their work for them, their next logical course of action would be to use this unfortunate incident as an excuse to employ the second largest fleet on the Western coast of Westeros - the fleet of the Far Reach to take back the Shields. And now you know the reason that I am here," Creyon smiled.
"I am here to ask for understanding on this issue - let the Ironborn settle this issue by ourselves. I assure you that we are looking into this matter of piracy along the Mander. More importantly, we will make sure it does not spill over to our neighbours in the the Far Reach. In short we ask that you simply do nothing, and there will be no reason for hostilities between our two factions. At the very least, if it came down to another bidding war with the Mander, let us know what price they are at. Qhored will surely spit on it, but I may be able to get the Lords of the Shields to consider," laughed Creyon.

"While I disagree with the Crown's decision to let you keep the Shields, and I think the fact his Grace has not been more forward with the realm regarding their status is an embarassment. . ." Loren paused realizing he might be revealing too much before continuing.
"Regardless. . . you can tell your father that the Far Reach cannot be bought by either side, and if we do anything it will only come from a clear ruling from his majesty."
"If your family can control piracy, respect the religious rights of the Followers of the Seven on the island and not force their conversion, then I see no reason why I will give much concern to who controls the Shields."
"Now if these conditions cannot be maintained by your family then I assure you the Shields will become a problem for me and I'll pay the Iron Price to place them in the hands of someone who can."
"You understand my position Creyon?" Loren says making sure his position is well understood.

"Religion should not be a problem. Both my uncle and I are not religious people. As for piracy, I will not make promises I cannot keep - there are limits to what we can do. We have four hundred captains capable of taking down their flags and going rogue when they are alone at sea, and at the moment we are not even sure if the problem at the Mander is an Ironborn one. What I can promise is if the current status quo holds, and you are able to provide credible evidence that a ship from the Far Reach was attacked by one of our ships, action will be taken against said captain and we shall compensate the monetary loss suffered by your side.
If that is not enough for you... while it is true you have the second largest fleet on the Western coast, I do not need reminding you whose fleet is the largest. Threats of paying the Iron Price is fine and good, but you can be assured the price will be a bitter one. I am no red priest, but my feeling is if it came to that, both sides will regret it. No matter who wins both sides will be weakened, and our enemies will surely capitalise."

Loren nods, "Creyon, I don't want war with the Iron men, as I said before we have had more in common with you then our supposed brothers in the Mander in many of the conflicts in the past. I understand the need for a Reaver to Reave and if you sank a thousand Braavosi ships I would applaud the effort, but commerce is the life blood of Oldtown and if piracy threatens that then it threatens my Lords and I will be forced to act."
Loren stops as if remembering something for a second. "Before the Rebellion, I remember dealing with a pirate group off our shores. They called themselves the Red Daggers, we bloodied them a bit off the arbor and haven't heard much from them since but only a fool would think they were gone."
"It is probably nothing but it might be something worth looking into, although if my memory serves me they were not your average pirates, they only plundered specific cargoes. We had to use a Valyrian Steel Sword as bait," Loren pauses remembering the battle where he was first blooded.
"If your investigation points towards pirates that are only targeting certain ships it might be worth looking into the Red Daggers. Although you would have to check with the Redwynne's in the Arbor they would know more about it."
