Seriously, the line between a second PC and NPC is blurry. Timm is pretty close to being Emelia's version of a fighting skill, while Aethan is entirely separate, and Benedicta is a member of Emelia's court who has plans and agendas of her own that don't entirely coincide with Emelia's all the time.

Yeah, following up on that, my former second Selwyn Stone was an integral character for me. While Selwyn ended up reunifying with Rhodri, he got involved in very different storylines and ended working contrary to Rhodri's goals. But I always considered him far more important than any other invented NPCs I've used -- his story was as important to me as Rhodri's, just as Yohn is as important to me now.

I agree; in many ways Aranya felt as alive to me as Elane, and now their storylines are on completely different paths - the only thing that connects them is blood, friendship and letters by raven. And when Aranya and Selwyn interacted, Selwyn felt as vivid as Rhodri - maybe even more so.
