Ser Mychel sat with the King in his pavilion in the hills around King's landing, amid the massive army assembled under the capital's walls.
"I almost killed a young knight today on the training yard. I saw him disarm two young Dondarrions one after the other, and offered him a duel. Knocked him out cold in two stokes," he said with a slight grin. "Still... I think he's got some potential. If he survives the battle, he could be right for the Kingsguard." Ser Mychel was looking at the wall of the tent, seeing nothing for a few moments, before he snapped back to reality. "Speaking of which, when the city is secured your grace and I are going to pick up your grace's training at arms, until your grace finds a Master-at-Arms. Still, I'm sure your grace remembers that I'm a decent teacher," the white knight said with another grin at the King.

"I remember Ser Mychel. What did you think of my earlier suggestion, on that subject?" Rickon asked.

"I think he would be an excellent choice. He's an amiable enough fellow, and an expert warrior. He's put me on my ass more than once at tourney," Ser Mychel said, with a sheepish smile. "The only man I know more skilled than he with the lance is your grace's Warden of the East. Perhaps Ser Lucas Harlaw, but he is practically a septon."

"Ser Lucas' religiosity is a worth attribute, but not, I think in a Master of Arms. And despite our falling out I have great faith in Lord Royce, but it would be an insulting position to offer him. I think the Dornishman is the best bet. I promise to only follow his example in sword and lance." Rickon laughed.
"So you think this young fellow is ready for a white cloak?"

"Not yet... Perhaps after this battle, though... I hope he survives. I wish we could all survive," he said sadly.

Rickon nodded. "Do you have an opinion, Ser Mychel, as to why we are never at peace?"

"After more than four decades I can only surmise that we are a warlike people by nature. Men are driven to war by instinct, as wolves are driven to hunt." Ser Mychel paused. "Lord Stark acted out of turn today, though Lord Dondarrion's behavior concerned me more than a little," he said slowly.

Rickon smiled, "You are not as good as Lord Benfry at changing the topic of discussion without being detected, and Lord Benfry was terrible. Tell me of your concerns of Lord Dondarrion."

"I do not know truly. Something just nags in the back of my mind. I think he is more loyal than Lord Stark believes, but his loyalty may shift if he's pushed, as Stark was doing. He's landed his own sellswords on Dragonstone; he seems to have a personal vendetta against Velaryon."

Rickon laughed. "You need to spend more time listening at court Ser Mychel. Everyone knows the two detest each other. It was their feud which spilled out into his treason. Lord Dondarrion still holds some of the Lightening "King"'s blood I think. It's unfortunate, but the man bears watching. Of course... they all do."

"I admit I am a soldier more than anything else. I imagine your grace heard those words from Lord Benfry more than once," Ser Mychel said. "I did have an idea, however, to create a second branch of the King's Men, devoted to intelligence gathering. I do not regret that Lady Plumm is in Highgarden with your grace's lady wife, but I wish I had my own branch of ears within this camp."

"I have more spies and whisperers than I can stand Ser Mychel. I will not have the only branches of governance which I trust corrupted by it as well. I forbid it."

"As you wish, your grace."

"Thank you for your understanding Ser Mychel, I know you mean well."

///////////////////////////////////////////////// Ser Mychel came to see the King in his solar, after his the first day of holding court in the Throne Room. "Forgive me, your grace, but I come to you now as one of what must seem like an endless line of supplicants. I request a boon of you, your grace," Ser Mychel said, bowing respectfully before the King.
