Rickon loves the history and lore that the this tower represents and comes here often to be with Benfry and Tytos.
This time he has a troubled look on his face, "Benfry, I have a question for you? Is it right for a King to take a sacred heirloom from a family? Even if that family committed treason?"

Benfry scratched his jawbone in thought "Well there's precedent, your Majesty. Heartsbane was taken from House Tarly and Longclaw from Mormont. It is a big step and, bar the dissolution of the entire House, amongst the most lasting punishments you can decree. Is this about the Blackwoods?" he asked gently

"No. Even though I think it is time for another Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. And the Tullys to have back Riverrun." He looks at his feet, "Benfry, has any one ever done that besides my father? Taken an heirloom from a house."

Benfry thought back "I am no scholar, your Majesty. But the old stories talk of the Targaryens who were never too hidebound when it came to tradition. Not only did they reassign whole areas into new hands - think of the Reach, the Riverlands and the Stormlands. None of their original lords survived their coming"
"Even among their own, they were at times quick to favour. Dark Sister was given to Daeron, the bastard, rather than his own trueborn heirs. That, of course, caused a civil war so it is best to tread carefully in these matters" he paused again
"Lord Harlaw will not be happy with your choices but his greed is such that he is one to watch. For all his loyalty he seeks power with every day and, though less cunning than Horas, is no less ambitious. The Tullys would be grateful and dependant on your rule sire. It is a shrewd move"

"The last thing a strong bear needs is another good meal." Rickon said if by rote, "Benfry... was my father a bad king?" He looked up to study Benfry's face as he replies.

"Callen?" Benfry scratched again, concious that he needed shave "No, your grace. He...perhaps allowed himself to be distracted by imperial ambitions. He hoped that by forming colonies abroad or increasing links with foreign lands that the nobles of Westeros would cease their plotting and machinations against each other. This proved to be sadly untrue, and only caused the eyes of those foreign powers who had long ignored us, to meddle in our affairs as your uncle found and was tempted"
"So which Lord do you think should rule the Riverlands, if not the Blackwoods, Tullys or Ironborn my King?" he said softly, watching the King's face intently

Rickon thought for a second, "My first thought would be the Mallisters. They command the respect of the whole of the Riverlands, and it would be a clear message to Lord Harlaw. But if you disagree Benfry, I will trust you wisdom."
He looked back to Smith, "When I read the histories, it seems like my father was unwise. Hasty, and given to poor decisions. A king should not be greedy." He grimaced slightly, "No he should not." He said tighter and under his breath.

Benfry rubbed his jaw "I was thinking of appointing a Tully, milord. Such a name carries weight in those lands still. We cannot allow Horas' son by Lady Jenny Tully, but perhaps Peiter Tully may grow into the leader we need them to be. We need a wise Regent to guide and assist him and I was hoping to speak to Lord Royce about seeing a Valeman to the post. As High as Honour, the Arryn's used to say and an honourable man is needed after Blackwood"
ooc: Not sure what happened to Jenny Tully - did she die as well?
"Callen was not a greedy man your Majesty, from what I have heard of the man through my conversations with Ser Edrick and Ser Giles before they died. His great flaw was perhaps mine as well. You cannot please everyone. I am slowly learning this lesson whereas you appear to have grasped it from the off" he grinned and ruffled the King's hair. "Perhaps we can learn from each other and together we'll turn this into a great nation again" he said with a wink

Rickon nodded, "I trust you judgement Lord Benfry, if you know of a trustworthy Valeman lets use him. And I have talked with Pieter Tully; he does not seem a bad sort." He paused and thought, "Is there anything else?"

"I am ever at your service my King but, the election of the Small Council aside, I believe the matters relating to the Regency and Dorne are done. I will see about replenishing our ranks amongst the Kingsguard as well. The King's Men are good and true but they lack the skill with a blade which your elite guard require" he says this with some modesty.

Rickon had been looking at the door, but at that he turned to face the white book. "May I see the last five pages again Benfry. I have not quite memorized them yet."

Benfry bowed "Of course, my King" and opened the book to the relevant pages. He sat quietly with the King and observed him as he read the lives and deaths of those most recently tasked with the safety of the ruler of Westeros

Several Days later, Rickon finds Benfry and Tytos and asks, "Lord Benfry I think it is high time for me to be engaged. I think it would have happened already if it were not for the wars. I have just advisted Lord Stark to marry, and then I realized that I am of the age to at very least discuss it." He looks at the two brothers expectantly.

Ser Tytos looks at Rickon, and smiles. "Well, you are probably right. Lets see..." He thought for a while, going over the unmarried nobles of Westeros.
"There are the Lannisters, who I believe have young female heirs. It might do well to marry one of them, to secure the Westerlands after all the troubles there."

Benfry considered the question "Lady Jeyne is of a similar age to your own, your Majesty. And I am sure that several other noble houses will have high ladies of suitable station. Has some young maiden caught your eye?"
