"Time passes slowly in the Citadel" Gideon though to himself as he walked down the hallway that led to his room. He had been in the Citadel for more than a year now, but he still hadn't taken any tests to start forging his links, and some of the other novices from the same year, that had forged a link or two, had started to whisper behind his back, but Gideon didn't know what they were saying, not that he cared or anything. His life contained mostly of reading the various books he could find in the library and there was so many that he didn't have time to take the test he explained to some of the teachers that had told him to do the test that would earn him a link. He had just been to the library, borrowing a new book that would probably keep him up all night again. He turned a corner and almost bumped into Maester Bertram, that was teaching him in Ravenry, but he managed to evade him by only an inch or two.
"Watch where you're going, Gideon" the maester said a little annoyed. "By the way, tomorrow you must take my test or you'll have to leave us. This is a place that trains maesters, not a library. See you tomorrow"
The maester hurried of before letting Gideon answer.

Acolyte Jaehaerys stopped when he saw the Ravenry Maester scold the novice. "Hey, seems you have been putting off your tests. Are you having trouble with the information?" He asked, smiling.

Gideon looked at the acolyte with a smile and slightly bowed his head. He had learned that a lot of the acolytes was of the opinion that novices should treat acolytes with more respect as they were closer to becoming Maesters. He wasn't sure about this one though, as he hadn't talked to him, only seen him at a distance around the castle.
"Yes, there's to many books in the library and so little time that I haven't gotten around taking the tests yet, luckily the other Maesters have allowed that, but maybe it's time for me to start taking them, Acolyte.. Excuse me, I don't know your name"

Jaehaerys smiled, "Where are my manners. I am Acolyte Jaehaerys, of 5 links. And you are Gideon, I believe I heard the Maester say?"

When the Acolyte smiled, Gideon relaxed a little as it didn't seem that Jaehaerys belonged to that group that thought themselves better than novices.
"Yes, I am Gideon. I don't know why Maester Bertram sounded so irritated, maybe something happened in one of his classes today."
He looked at Jaehaerys, making a note of him and how he stood. He had started doing that ever since he found that old book in the library. He assessed Jaehaerys balance and which of the moves in the book would be used to get him of his feet, but he never used the moves, he just studied them and used them theoretically.
"Five links you said..Then you'll soon finished here.. Which classes have you taken?" He asked almost all at once
"Im sorry for asking so much, I just want to know all I can about everything. I always have and I think I'll always will be, but I'll shut up now and let you answer"

Acolyte Jaehaerys chuckled. "I have links in ravenry, economics, astronomy and history. (I have platinum too, not sure what study that is.) I plan on staying for quite a while longer, I want to achieve about 15 links." Jaehaerys smiled, "Asking questions are good. Questions lead to answers, which leads to knowledge.

He nodded and smiled. He liked this fellow, he seemed to have the same thirst for knowledge as he did, so he thought he could ask him. It couldn't hurt.
"Have you read a book named 'Maesters of Old'? I found it in the library and I found it a very interesting read."

Jaeyhaerys thinks for a second. "Maesters of Old.. Yes, I believe I have. It is about how Maesters used to receive more military training?" Jaehaerys said, although more of a statement then a question.

"So what did you think about what it said?"
He stretched his neck and stiffled a yawn. His body was probably more tired than he thought, he would have to read the book tomorrow instead after the test. He would need all the rest he could get before taking it,but still he didn't move or say anything, he just waited for Jaehaerys to answer.

Jaehaerys gave Gideon a good long look, Seems this one is very inquisitive, he will make a great maester. "I thought it was very interesting. A time when Maesters learned the arts of war.. Of course, there are still some out there who believe we should. I myself, think that war is a game for knights and lords. But of course, even a Maester needs to protect himself. I'd say overall it is a decent idea, since it would give reasons for Maesters to be at the battle to heal people, or to be able to defend themselves if the castle is under attack." Jaehaerys finished the long rattle on, and smiled.
"I think you will make a great Maester, Gideon. You are very inquisitive, and ask questions were most would just move on and forget about it. The lord that will have you will be a very lucky man."

He smiled and bowed his head once more. It wasn't the answer he had hoped, but it was closer to what he believed than most of the other ones' he had asked. Mostly people just thought he was crazy to even think about it.
"Thank you for those kind words, Acolyte Jaehaerys. I hope that whoever I'll serve will be proud of me and not think I'm a pain, like most of my peers do." He yawned. "I'm afraid I need to go and find some sleep, I need to be rested for my test tomorrow. I bid you a good night."
He then turned and went to his room.

/////////////////// Jaeyhaerys enters the library, and picks out a large and dusty tome with Maesters of Old on its front. He starts reading it, all through the day, not stopping even for dinner.

Months had passed since he had taken the test that had earned him his first link, and time had been relatively quiet. He had continued his studies, but he had moved from his room to more secluded room, further down, at his own request. There he was left alone for some time, but again maesters where complaining that he was using them, never intending to become a maester, so this time he was forced to take two tests at the same day. 'But that's not until tomorrow' he thought to himself, opening up another book on the history of Westeros. A knock at the door disturbed his reading.

Jaehaerys knocked, and slowly opened the door. "Hello Gideon." Jaehaerys said, a smile on his face. "I heard you have two tests tomorrow. Do you need any help?"

He smiled and asked Jaehaerys to come in.
"Sure, help is always welcome, two minds work better than one"
He offered the acolyte the chair, while he sat down on his bed, closing the book he had been reading.
"So what do you know about the tests they'll do, that will earn me a a silver and gold link"
