"My men are in tents on the outskirts of town, I was planning on spending the night in the field with them. I wouldn't want to trouble the people of Oldtown especially with all your recent losses." Alexander pauses wondering if it was wise to breach the subject, "I could use some travel provisions though its a good 4 days travel to the coast for my men. If you had some jerky or hard tack that would be helpful."

"Well there is much I could learn from you I am sure. My experience with such matters is confined mostly to my small village and a little of the politics of Bandallon where I squired. So I think I will take you up on that offer Garlan, if you sure its no trouble?"

Alexander adjusts uneasily to the tense situation, having not ever really dealt with the loss of his Father the discussion of death makes him uneasy.
"I am truly sorry for your loss, I had heard you were very close. Losing a loved one is never easy. Lets pray that the worse is over for now."

"We weren't related and we had no blood relation so what right do I have to mourn him." Garlan refuses to say Robert's name again.

"The Father judges us on our relationships with all people, and The Mother is sure to show mercy for all with compassion, whether they are of our blood or not." Alexander pauses hoping not to sound too preachy. "The Stranger acts without reason on why our loved ones perish but the Seven work to provide balance allowing other relationships to grow as old ones cease. Its the natural cycle and one that even the Septons can not explain with any confidence."

"Simply marvelous. . . I am glad that Lord Varner's mother could find happiness again, it so seldom happens, but it is nice to see when two people truly find love instead of convenience."

The two men continued to talk through the remainder of the night remembering their loved ones and sharing their plans for the future. In the morning Ser Irwyn and his company of 250 men departed Oldtown to continue their journey to Bandallon, now resupplied thanks to the grood graces of the Steward.

Ser Francis sat behind a massive oak desk in what was once Lord Robert's solar. He had been informed by messenger that the good Maester Alesander Hightower had arrived, and would be coming shortly to discuss matters of great importance.
