Pentos is a massive continental city far to the north of Braavos and east of Lys. It sits on a large bay. It features many square brick towers and is run by the wealthy Magisters, merchant lords of Pentos. Pentoshi men like to dye and oil their forked beards. The servants wear bronze collars to denote their status.

Elane's party moved from their handsome inn in the city to Elane's new house overlooking the bay. It was a relief to be out of Braavos, and Elane was angered with the news of the Sealord. Brandon had never seen her look quite so angry, even in her calm way.

Elane Buckler rode her grey mare back from an evening with Qarro and his other five. Her guards Colloquo and Fredico rode at her side, and her trained shadowcats accompanied them. As dusk grew, Elane always grew more watchful. The shadowcats she had brought from Braavos could see perfectly in the dark, their silver eyes gleaming. She felt safe as she rode home. She pondered what Qarro had told her.

Elane often delighted in taking Rose out with her when she was doing business in the city. Today was one such day. Elane strolled by the shops, holding Rose's hand. They were accompanied by Elane's bodyguards, but there was no need for such in Pentos. Andal Pentoshi shopowners greeted Elane loudly and warmly as she passed, and offered Rose all sorts of sweetmeats and sausages and chilled summer drinks. When she saw something Rose wanted, Elane would stop and get it for her. Most of the shopowners refused payment.

The old woman with the smoke glasses sold love charms and trinkets to passerbyes in the square. She had heard Elane and her daughter occasionally came into the square and after a few days of selling and trading, she did indeed the two of them. Elane looked happy and the daughter seemed well and her genuine affection for Elane was evident.
A pang tugged at the old woman's heart but she knew that she'd risked enough. She'd seen what she came to see.

Rose showed her brave Buckler blood when she got a bravo sword and did some waterdancing, much to everyone's delight. Elane looked on, proud of Brandon's daughter. "Being a bastard will not hinder you, I see," she said.

The Lucky Bastard docks in Pentos, but a few days after leaving Braavos. Most of the crew is given leave, while its captain, Erik Pyke, takes a few men as guards, along with Maester Grimon, off to see what the city can offer. Having heard of Elane Buckler's favoring of the Westerosi, Erik makes for her residence.

Erik returns to the harbor after a lovely lunch at the Buckler residence, and he is greeted by a few of his men when he gets to the ship. All the men on board seem on edge and begin to gather round, but none blurt anything out until Erik asks, "Well, what is it? No, you can't have more beer money, you got plenty last time."
"...'S not that, cap'n." One of the reavers, Harsin, blurts out. "We 'eard the news from a trader, just docked out o' Dragonstone." He smiles, and continues, "There's war, cap'n. The Reach rose up. 'E didn't say nothin' 'bout the Islands, but no way in the Drowned God's Hall will old Harlaw sit this one out."
"War..." Erik whispers, a smile on his face. "It's been too long since we had a good fight. All right, then. Find the rest of the men. If they aren't here within the hour, I certainly hope they enjoy Pentos. We sail for King's Landing as soon as possible."
"King's Landing, cap'n?" A few of the men ask.
"Aye. We'll get a lay of the land before we decide what to do. Maester Grimon, kindly hurry back to Lady Elane's home. Tell her the news, and give her my sincerest apologies that we won't be able to attend the meeting tomorrow. And hurry back."

Maester Grimon returned about an hour later, muttering under his breath. He cast Pyke a dark look when he wasn't watching and limped onboard the ship without so much as a word.

With Grimon on board, the ship casts off, only one man short. No real loss, just some lazy fool named Harmund. The crew quickly strikes up an old reaving song.

A ship from King's Landing docked at port. Eventually two knights in shining armor came down the gangway. The knight with the golden lobster on his shield led a noble horse, while the knight with a red castle on his shield led a very unhappy cow.

"Ah, Pentos," Ser Mim sighs, "The grand city of, ah," he casts a glance around at the locals, "The grand city of strange colored beards. I wonder, are there dragons afoot here?"

"Let us ask. Do not be too close to these people - they are heathens, after all, and might mean us ill."
Ser Alliser nudged his cow forward, and a Pentoshi sailor looked alarmed. "What do you want?"
"A penny for your news, my good man," Ser Alliser said. "We are on a Quest. Have you heard of dragons?"
"No," said the man, eyeing Alliser's cow. "But for a coin, I'll tell you a story about a fire."

"A fire?" Ser Mimseval asks, "A dragonfire, mayhaps?" He hands a copper coin to the man, but watches it mournfully as it disappears into the Pentoshi's purse. Coin was not as plentiful as it once was for brave Ser Mim.
"Tell your tale, goodman," Mim says. "And be sure to give it lots of flourishes and mayhaps a bit of playacting as well. I paid well for these services."
