Laren was standing hidden in the shadow of a wall, watching some boys practicing their swordplay in the training yard. He was glad that the master-at-arms hadn't noticed him, as most people seemed to have forgotten about his existence. Something was happening in the Vale and he meant to find what it was.

A dark haired eleven year-old youth spotted the boy next to the wall. He had just taken his lumps from a boy stronger and more advanced, and thought that maybe he could hide in the shadow too. He walked up and said, "Hi!"

"Hi, was that the son of the master-of-horse? Er.... hm, I've forgotten his name. Looks he has improved his skills in pushing smaller people around."

"Yes, he's Timmet Moore." The boy said as he worked his shoulder and winced. "He got me pretty good." He reached out a hand, "I am Eddison Waxley."

He took it "I'm Laren Royce. I know Timmet, last I've been his favourite punching bag."

Eddison laughed. "You can call me Edd, Laren. Which branch of Royces are you from?"

"My great-grandfather was a younger brother to Lord Edric Royce, but except for me and my aunt Alayne my family branch is dead. We've stayed for most of my life here in Runestone. And you've just started your training as a squire, Edd?"

"Yes, my brother, Ser Jonas Waxley, told me I was grown soft in Wickenden and asked my father to send me somewhere to be turned into a man. I guess my father agreed." Edd's voice grew a bit darker as he spoke.

Laren gave Edd a sympathetic look and said "I think my aunt is thinking about something similar of late, but she won't tell me what she's really up to. And I guess till she'll let me know I'm going stay here." he made a shrug "And I fear I won't be able to hide here in the shadows much longer to avoid the training.... But next time you're paired up with Timmet, just avoid his high right blows. He always makes them after a weaker, from the left and steps slightly back before putting his full weight into the blow. I should be easy to doge away."

Edd smiled. "Thanks! I'll keep it in mind. I just saw the master-at-arms, I think he's spotted us..." Edd's eyes shifted back and forth a little, "Maybe it would best if we picked up some training swords and made a show of it, to avoid him putting us back with Timmet."

They walked out of the shadow into the sunlit training yard, picked up some training swords and started to practice their swordplay. "Is the sword your favourite weapon?" Laren asked quietly, not wanting anyone around them to hear. He didn't feel comfortable with it himself.

Edd sighed. "I guess so. I use it the most, often. Don't like axes or hammers..."

They practiced with their swords for a while under the watchfull eyes of the master-at-arms, till he call an end to the training. The two boys walked over to the kitchens, in hope of getting a fresh baked cake or something from on of the kitchen girls.
"Tell me, has anything interesting happend here. I'm not sure if you know it, but I was away for a while....."

After a couple of days of easy riding through the valleys and passes of the Vale, Robert and Eddard finely made it to their home. Robert stopped his horse at the top of the hill overlooking the Royce castle. He remained in silence for a few moments, and then trotted down, with Eddard following him, the bow of his Summer-Island mother over his shoulder.

"Hmm, new things...?" Edd cocked his head to the side, "Most new, I guess, is Lord Royce's new Dornish wife. She seems strange to me, but real pretty like. She never notices the likes of me though. Also, seems like something's going on somewhere. Lots of soldiers hanging around and my brother keeps marching through here on the way into or out of the Vale..." ////////////Later as Laren takes on the bully Timmet/////// Edd Waxley gave a happy shout as his new friend Laren felled Timmet.
