A raven arrives from Longbow Hall.
Ser Jon Royce,
I, Ser Robar Hunter, am resigning as Lord Commander of the Vale Watch on grounds of family duties. With my brother dead, the Seven bless him, in the Battle of the Wall, it falls to me to protect and rule Longbow Hall, and continue House Hunter. It seems only fitting that I be succeeded by a Royce, and you are famed in Westeros for your martial prowess and courage. Take the office of Lord Commander, good ser, and protect the Vale of Royce in these dark times.
Yours, Ser Robar Hunter, erstwhile Lord Commander of the Vale Watch, Lord of Longbow Hall.

OOC: I'm just going to give you my password so you can edit my dumbass posts. Nine+ months of no sleep (nine months since the baby was born) is having its effect on me. That's like 4-5 silly, incorrect things I've stuck in posts so far this morning. And it's still early.

OOC: Oh, congratulations! It's okay, parenthood addles the brains, it is known.

A heavy wind blows through the Godswood of Runestone, a strange wind from the southeast.

Maester Cerwyn of Runestone, having received myriad ravens in the morning, sits depressed in his tower, wondering how to break the news to Lord Commander Jon Royce and Lady Martina. Another raven arrives, from the Gates of the Moon. Maester Cerwyn is shocked that Lady Elane is in the Eyrie, now the domain of Rhodri Arryn. He writes a reply and sends the raven back.
Maester Cerwyn goes to Lord Commander Royce. "My lord, we have received news from Callen Baratheon's party that House Royce has officially declared for the Stag - but that we are no longer Wardens of the East. Lord Rhodri has been named Lord Arryn of the Eyrie, Lord Paramount of the Vale and Warden of the East. We must prepare his household for him, but I fear that the snows may be too deep. What is your command?"

Jon Royce sits thoughtfully. "The Arryns of old would winter at the Gates of the Moon. But we must send to the Citadel and request a Maester for the Eyrie. Even if they spend the snows down in the Vale, they must have a full household now. A maester, septon, and until my cousin returns there must be a Castellan in name."
"But what does this all mean? Why take the name Arryn? We Royces have been Lords of the Vale since Lord Robert Arryn died. Rhodri should rule from Runestone as his father did."

"Our new king has named him Lord Arryn, for reasons only known to those two, my lord," Maester Cerwyn said doubtfully. "I cannot understand it either. I shall send for maester and septon as you command, but before I do that, we have more sad news. King's Landing is burned to the ground thanks to Aedon and his dragon. A matter of pride for the Vale, however, is that Ser Garrett, who squired here, killed the dragon. We must take it as vengeance for Lord Breyn, my lord. The Redfort knight died, and so did most of our army. I know not if your father survived. Dondarrion and Aedon are both dead. King Callen's army now holds the city."

The maester paused. "Should we send aid, my lord, or ready the Vale's defenses?"

"And we are now sworn as a house to this Callen? The man who we overthrew? I fought and bled at Casterly Rock to remove him from the Iron Throne. Was my cousin coerced into this? Or is this 'Lord Arryn' a pretender and not my cousin Rhodri at all? Is it Selwyn making a ploy for power? Bastards cannot be trusted," Jon says.

"I agree, my lord," Maester Cerwyn said. "Perhaps we should send envoys to see if this is true? Or would my lord himself want to ride out? Lady Elane is in the Eyrie right now - I just received a message from the Gates of the Moon. She says nothing, except that she is there on Lord Rhodri's orders."

"Orders she received in person, or by messenger?" Jon asked. "Elane would not conspire against us. I will ride to her, and know of what has happened. I will bring with me the a part of the strength of the Vale Watch, in case there are more tricks we need be wary of."
