The River Road snakes southwest from Riverrun, between the Red Fork and Tumblestone before climbing into the western hills. The border with the Westerlands is guarded by the Golden Tooth, an imposing fortress, before the road descends towards Casterly Rock.

The combined might of the Vale, the Riverlands and Dorne marches along the River Road, approaching the Golden Tooth. The army is commanded by the Hand to the King, Lord Rhod Arryn, whose close captains include Warren Blackwood, Lord Dominic Grafton, called the Sharp, and the Stone Hawk of Dorne.

The Stone Hawk looked at Lord Arryn as the deal went off. "More political games?" he asked the Hand calmly.

A dun-colored cow came galloping up, lowing angrily.
When one peered ahead, it was easy enough to make out her erstwhile rider, who had fallen on a field and now limped towards the army, brandishing a harp and singing his allegiance. His clothes were dirty and a bit torn, but the arms could be made out on his knight's surcoat.
"I offer you my sword!" he trilled at them as he came closer.

The Stone Hawk looked at Lord Arryn as the deal went off. "More political games?" he asked the Hand calmly. "Games? I'm not fond of that word. But we just saved the lives of 5,000 men inside those walls and the 10,000 who would have died trying to take them." "I think it was a worthy trade to have Steffen Lannister stand amongst the spared. There will be enough bloodshed as it is." With that, the Hand directs his men to start taking control of the castle, which will now serve as a base of operations, conduit for supply caravans, and failsafe retreat should the tide somehow turn.

"Hand," Alliser panted, catching up with his cow. "In need of a singer? I went to Casterly Rock and looked around, but nobody wanted me. Ser Randal just sat with Lord Allard the whole time."

Guards hustle the fool out of the way, reminding him that the Hand is very busy. In the end, Alliser is deposited in the Golden Tooth stables, sitting alongside Felwick Gower, who has slipped away from the work of fortifying the keep to drink a little ale and eat a loaf of bread with salt fish he stole from the castle larder.
Gower does not recognize the fool as the knight Alliser Redfort, a man he met at Storm's End a couple years prior. He offers Alliser some scaly looking fish and a tankard.

The cow had chosen to follow Alliser there, and it stood staring at Gower.
"Nobody loves me," Alliser said mournfully, taking the fish and looking at it unenthusiastically. "Nobody wants me. Only the Casterly Rock staff did, but they hated Allard. But then they stopped liking me when I said bad things about Allard. People are so confusing."

"Love will cost you a couple coins and can be found in every dank harbor tavern or sun-blasted roadside inn, boy. Nothing worth moping over. Now eat that fish or I'll take it back, I'm hungrier than that cow of yours," Gower says, with his customary gusto.

Alliser peeled off the scales of the cooked fish and took a bite. "So are you fighting Allard?" He was satisfied at the thought of the people who scorned singing being defeated. "Don't hurt the cook, though. She's nice."

"I'll marry the bloody cook if she can make me better food than the camp provisions", Gower says. "Hey, stop pulling the skin off. That's good part."
"And aye, we bring the fight to the Little Lion. We've just pulled his tooth, so he doesn't have much bite left."
