"It is exactly the same with me, although my parents did not exactly have that relationship." Aranya gave a bark of laughter. "Edwyn Royce was a drunken sot who fucked everything that moved and picked fights for the hell of it. He was useless, but women liked his looks. And my mother, Alyssa Hunter, was headstrong and stupid and thought my father loved her. I think I have always been cautious about trusting men." Aranya hesitated. "But I respect you, and have affection for you as well as desire. I want to be able to trust you too."

Reaching out Cedric smiled and ran his hand through her hair, "Have you heard the expression about the apple and the tree?" He kissed her on the lips softly. "Can you tell me something.... something secret about yourself? If you do... well a Lannister always pays his debts."

Aranya laughed. "Maybe so," she admitted softly, kissing him back. "People have said I take after him in some ways."
She laid her head on his shoulder, thinking. "One of my close friends was Lance Sands - Goldface, who fomented the rebellion of the Night's Watch."

Cedric thought about that for a long moment. "Do you know, I have never been in a battle?"

Aranya looked at him thoughtfully. "Some would call you a wise man, others a craven. I would never underestimate you so. You are five and twenty, long a man grown, with plenty of chances to war. What stopped you, each time?"

"How can I measure up to my father? I am not a genius. I can not..." Cedric paled but continued, "I am not a master of battle. My talents lie in other directions... I will fail. Men will die, and the damage I will have wrought on my name, and lands."

"Cedric," Aranya said firmly. "At half the age Baldwin was when he won the Targaryens' war, you already show even more shrewdness and subtlety than he did. Do not judge yourself so harshly and, above all, do not compare yourself to others. Only despair and self doubt awaits at the end of that road. See yourself for what you are - an exceptional, intelligent man. And as for battle..." she smiled, and put her arms around him. "What is a wife for, if not to protect her husband? You have me, heart and soul, and I will not fail you, I promise. You will not fail, not on the strength of your wits and my experience."

His hands held her close and then he said a little too calmly, "You must not be around when the battle starts. I have no experience, and you are a legendary warrior. I need to prove to all the men in my command that I am in charge. I can not have them thinking you are in charge." His hands squeezed around her waist, "In private you will be my teacher and mentor, but in public... you must understand."

Aranya gazed at him, and then smiled. "I understand, and I agree. I would not have it any other way."

Cedric leaned in and kissed her on the mouth, his smile evident against her lips. As their lips parted he whispered, "Thank you."

"It will not require my effort on my part, I think," Aranya said. "You are a greater man than you realize."

Cedric smiled shyly and released her backing away. Moving to the crest of the ridge he stared down at the fires burning in his camp. "You have never said anything kinder to me."

"It's not kindness," she stroked his arm. "It's the truth. I have seen many men come and go, Cedric, but few like you."

Cedric turned into her both of his hands slipping behind her head. He pulled her into a hot, and savage kiss. He tasted her, and felt a rush of love and lust pour through his body.

Aranya kissed him back hungrily, and pushed him down onto the grass to have her way with him.
