The Sea Road traces the coast from Highgarden to Lannisport, connecting the wealth and resources of the Westerlands to the bounty of the Reach.

Ser Rhodri Royce and Ser Piers Bettley lead the vanguard for the Songlord Silas Caron, bringing a force of heavy horse north along the Sea Road to join the fray to protect Casterly Rock. The Songlord follows with the bulk of the foot, armored men of the Stormlands hardened by the conquest of the Reach.
Ser Gathor Tyrell and Lord Tyrell ride with them as their honoured guests, watched but well treated.

The Songlord wheels his horse to ride alongside Ser Piers and Ser Rhodri. He nods to the men with familiarity.
"I haven't had a chance to tell either of you...it was a pleasure standing by your sides through," he looks at Rhodri, "Horn Hill," he looks at both of the knights, "and Highgarden". "Mighty fine work if I do say so myself. I have fought perhaps dozens of battles like Horn Hill but rarely have I found men as worthy to fight along side..."
He pauses for a moment and the only noise is that of the horses stamping into the ground. But then he begins to speak again, "Don't mean to sound sappy and all", he chuckles softly, "after the war is over, I mean to write a song about this war. It is not so different from other wars, but I suppose it is my age that makes it more...meaningful."
He tugs on the tunic he wears as though he dreads any potential awkwardness.

"Speak well of me, mi'lord, in your songs. When my bones are dust and my spear long since broken, singers from the Wall to Sunspear will still be singing your words. I would have my legacy well remembered!"
"It has been an honor to serve in your company, mi'lord. You are the commander that young men such as myself aspire to someday be."

"Mi'lord," Rhodri said, turning to Lord Caron, "Do you think the rumour is true? That Kid Death stole into the Baratheon camp and slew King Rodrick himself?"

Lord Sylas returned Rhodri's gaze, "Heh", he seemed to laugh, "I have no doubt. I have known that boy since he was very little. I taught him how to wield a sword, and more importantly I fostered him at Nightsong... And well, I know much more about him and what makes him tick than many people do. He has more prowess with a blade than any man living, and most of those dead", pausing he said, "Especially those he has slain!".
"I do worry for his health though. He is still but a kid in my eyes... and while it was a decade or more since I was fostering him, he seems to not have gotten over the same problems he dealt with then."

"His health? Does he drink too much mi'lord?"

"Not more than myself. In sooth, he overly concerns and frustrates himself with the opposite sex. He is still a boy though, barely older than yourself if at all. I understand his desire for certain individuals, even my own daughter -her being a fine girl and all-, but there is a reason brothels profit so well. He should be taking advantage of that."

"Ah...I see. Overindulgence can...weaken a man. And the wrong dalliance could leave a man a head shorter."
"Do you think he may rejoin our host now?"

"It is not overindulgence so much as a surprising innocence with these matters. Given his status as a swordsman one might imagine him to also be something of a sex-maven. He is nothing near to that."
The Songlord smiled fondly and looked as though he was mulling something over, "But I am not sure if he will rejoin us. I stopped trying to understand the kid years ago. Deadly as he is, it is not worth it".

"Ah, I misunderstood. Intriguing figure, indeed."

"Right-o, Ser Royce."
There was silence for a few moments and then the Songlord broke it, "May I ask you a question, Ser Rhodri?", and without looking to see if he had Rhodri's consent he asked, "Do you wonder about dying? That is to say...are you afraid of the inevitable?"

"I've nearly died a few times already. Once, three or four years ago, I was captured by the Stone Crows. Jach, Clanchief, was persuaded to let me go, and I even befriended his sons, but his axe had been inches from my neck before he changed his mind. You spend some time thinking about your fate when you see death so close."
"I nearly died again fighting the Moon Brothers; it was foggy and dark, and my horse and I fell from a high ridge and tumbled a hundred feet down nearly sheer rock. It was two days before my men found me. I had eaten my horse by then just to survive."
"Death alone does not scare me. Being forgotten is what I fear. I long to have my name amongst the legends. It is why I considered joining the White Cloaks; my name in the White Book would have made me immortal. But I have found some glory my own way in this war; I won a tourney in King's Landing, I was able to help take Horn Hill and pushed the Tyrells to yield Highgarden and the Reach. I have wed a princess born of a Targaryen mother. My life has already gone beyond my dreams. If I die in the field in the days ahead, I will not be a legend, but some will remember me."
"I take some solace in that. What else can I do? I am a warrior. My life is only guarded by my own hand and plate steel. And the gods."

Ser Piers snorts, "You live for the history books Ser Rhodri? That is a dry life. I live for today, let all my bastard's bastards have the future. When death comes for me I will be drunk, occupied in vigorous exercise with two young beautiful maidens and eating a plum. Then I will politely ask death to comeback in a hour for I am previously engaged."

"I don't live for the history books, Ser Piers, I just hope to die in them. Our words are 'We Remember', Ser Piers, and I'd hate to be the one Royce forgotten. I live for the moment; for the wine, the women, or blood and pounding hooves at dawn. But how I shall die is a question I ponder."
