Gwayne sighed. "Leyton, listen to yourself. If a husband loves his wife, their children will be conceived in joy. The gods must value love, because they wish us to have children, and surely it is better for a child to be conceived in love, than in a marriage which lacks love? It you deny yourself the chance of loving a woman, either your children will be born from a loveless match, or else you will have no chilren at all. That would be...a pity."
He wondered what Leyton would say if he told him his plan, but he didn't know his young cousin well enough yet.

He wondered what Leyton would say if he told him his plan, but he didn't know his young cousin well enough yet. "Am I married?" Leyton asked a rhetorical question. "The example you have described hardly pertains to my current situation. In any event, if a man loves a woman as you have described, then it is his duty to marry her before he beds her, is it not? And if a man loves a woman he does not seek to marry, then that is most unbecoming, and will surely be viewed in a negative light by those greater than ourselves."

"A man does not choose who he falls in love with," Gwayne said wearily. "Trust me on that, Leyton. Love strikes where it will. Perhaps one day you will find out for yourself. When you do, perhaps you will not be so quick to talk of what is becoming. But no matter, you are neither married nor betrothed, so it does not matter very much. Tell me about Teirney Lannister, if you will. What age is she? Is she pretty? Does she have a betrothed?"

OOC: I've actually been waiting on a tag from Teirney for several days now (I reminded her a while ago but she still hasn't gotten to it), so while I feel Leyton should know more, right now this is all he can offer. Leyton decided not to argue the point further, it was clear he was only annoying his liege. He set about answering his questions as best he could. "Teirney is a year my senior." Leyton replied, starting with the most concrete of facts. "She is...beautiful." he continued, surprised himself with his word choice. "I...do not know if she is betrothed. I cannot imagine she is, she surely would have told me if she was when we spoke at Lord Tyrell's celebration of the Reach."

OOC - unfortunate. I know you're not the first to say that, unfortunately, but we'll work with what we have
"Indeed. Well, that is interesting at least. Tell me, do you think it worth pursuing our connection with Casterly Rock still further? A match between our houses, perhaps."

Tell me, do you think it worth pursuing our connection with Casterly Rock still further? A match between our houses, perhaps." "No." Leyton blurted quickly, lest he be matched to Nymeria. However, after thinking for a few more seconds he realized that Aurane would be unlikely to marry his favorite daughter to his former squire. Which left...Teirney and Sansa. Sansa, Leyton hardly knew and did not wish to court. Teirney however required a bit more thought. "Well...perhaps." he said, changing his initial assessment.

"Perhaps you would care to be my envoy and relay our interest in beginning negotiations to the Lannisters?" Gwayne suggested. "The details would need to wait, but it would be good to learn if the Lannisters are interested. But not until we are back in Oldtown, if Lord Aurane is willing to attend the tourney, or to send someone of a suitable rank to negotiate on his behalf. After all, it's entirely possible that he would prefer one of his daughters to wed me rather than one of my kinsmen. There are several of us eligible, yourself included, but it would be a false modesty to pretend I am not the most obvious choice. But I would prefer to see if the lady I admire will be a possible match for me first."
He paused, took a breath and looked very seriously at Leyton.
"I have one other favour to ask, if you are willing to keep a secret. Remember, it will be a sacred oath between us if you consent, so I will not force the matter. But, once sworn, it cannot be undone."

Will this favor require anything of me?" Leyton asked, cautiously.

"It will. But I cannot tell you what until you give your solemn oath, because it is a delicate matter," Gwayne sighed. "It concerns the Lannisters, as it happens. So I will understand if you say no."

"I..." Leyton sighed, what was the purpose of swearing fealty to Gwayne if he did not trust him? "Very well, you have my word as a knight."

The corners of Gwayne's mouth curved up in the hint of a smile. "I don't wish you to be troubled, but I know that if you accept this duty it will be a conflict of interests. A fellow nobleman believes that House Lannister may be offering support to the exiled prince, or at least planning to do so if he attempts a coup. I was hoping you could find out some information about that."

He had gotten no sense of such treasonous inclinations during his recent interaction with members of house Lannister. "What would you have me do?"

"Talk to them. Try to find out their inclinations. Subtly of course. I am not sure why the other lord believes this about the Lannisters - he could only give me vague rumours as evidence - but I think it worth finding out more. I certainly hope it's not true," Gwayne sighed.

"Perhaps. Yet I wonder who," Gwayne mused. "Who are their friends? They've ties to Dorne and House Baratheon, but I cannot believe the Baratheons, at least, would consider treason."
